Oktava vs DVX onboard example

Cool little sample. I'm very tempted to buy the oktava... which capsule did you use? Hyper?

Also a question to the general public: can you buy the mk012 with JUST the hyper capsule or do you have to buy the 3 capsule package in order to get the hyper?

DJ,

You can get the mic body with just the hyper cap and a 10db cut. Be sure to get the black version, it's very cool. ;-)

BTW to all, if you do get the black version, the hyper logo on the side of the cap doesn't quite show the back loop fully, so it sort of looks like a cartioid symbol. Not a big deal (of course I called sound-room on this and they reassured me). Also another big recommendation for Sound-Room and a thank you to Matt for turning us on to this little gem.

Thanks! I'll go check it out. I'm assuming it runs like 250ish for the mic and single capsule?

I looked it up and it was $173 at the sound room. Probably more after shipping though.

Quick question. I'm thinking of buying an oktava (two actually). I know this may sound stupid but plugging two up into the DVX and running them at the same time from boom poles...good or not?

I'm getting ready to start on a feature film and I want the best dialogue audio I can get. I'm a little tired of wires hanging from my actors from lavaliers and such.

Enter coupon code "DV" or mention it if you call... then it's just under $165 from Sound Room. Yeah... dirt cheap and really good... how can you beat that?

Damn ......just bought one....I've gotta stop coming here....you guys cost me MONEY! :)

If you've got visible wires hanging from your lavs and wireless kits, you've done something wrong. It is very easy to keep the wires hidden (presuming the wardrobe department is feeling cooperative.)

Yup it's the hyper capsule.

Agreed. But, you also saved several hundred bucks in not buying the next best hyper:) . I guess that's the real reason we keep coming here.

Has anyone bought this package with the wind screen? I'm curious how well that works.
I did just because. Worthless. That mic is EXTREMELY sensitive, just try an anemic breath blow-by and see. I'm beginning to face the reality of the Baby Ball Gag/ Windjammer combo.

That said, even paying for the mic and necessary accessories you're still coming up less expensive than buying the next comparable mic up the food chain.

Thanks for the info. I'll most definitely look into it. I was afraid the stock windscreen would be crap.

You only need the windjammer (the furry jacket which is added to the baby ball gag) if you plan to use the Oktava outdoors in unknown conditions.

If you plan to mainly use the Oktava indoors... or outdoors on VERY calm days... then you can get by with ONLY the baby ball gag. The BBG will allow you to use the Oktava as a normal boom mic... giving you the ability to make fairly brisk boom movements without fear of rumbling the audio. (Obviously a shockmount is the other half of this particular equation.)

The Shure A81WS is only $30 (from B&H) and that will supply adequate protection for much of the time... that's about like the Windtech Extreme Conditions screen which sells for $50... I'd say those two screens are nearly equal... with perhaps the nod going to the Windtech... BUT NEITHER of those screens is HALF as effective as the BBG alone (without the optional fur windjammer). The BBG is stupidly expensive for what it IS but worth the price for what it DOES.

I agree that if you look at the total package you will still come out $ ahead with the Oktava and BBG. Other mics still need windprotection... just because the Oktava is so sensitive it's not like some other mic won't need SOMETHING anyway. If you gotta' buy a softie for any small shotgun then the $100+ price range is something you should already be used to for windscreens that work.
