Oktava not turning on

Hey Again guys,

I just got my Oktava and my XLR cables. I plugged the XLR into Input 2, I have the switch on the front of the camera set to MIC for Input 2, and I've switched Ch 1 and Ch 2 select both to Channel 2 on the inside of the LCD. Also, I've switched ON for the 48v phantom power for CH 2.

The mics not working!

What's going on...I hope im doing something wrong.

check again you in the right socket , fopen the phantom on the both channels , somethig cheanged ?

Do you have the -10db pad screwed in? You shouldn't. You are getting nothing on the meters? Is the volume on your headphones up? Is the level dial up?

Sorry if these are dumb Q's you seem to know how to do it since you knew to swithc the inputs, set it for mic level and turn on the +48

I've done everthing like you guys said and nothing has changed.

No -10db pad and I turned on both of the Phantom powers. Theres nothing i need to change in the menu settings on the LCD is there??

Also, could it be the cable. I just bought it today at Guitar Center...its a 25 ft. XLR and was like $35. I can't imagine thats the problem

I'm not sure what to do...do I call sound-room and ask them whats up?

Also, I noticed that when I blow onto the hypercardoid pad I get a small reading. But then when i talk no reading. Not sure if this shows anything...

You never want to blow into a microphone (or tap on it). it can damage the diaphram. Think of it as an eardrum (which is basically what it is) would you like someone to blow hard in your ear? There are other forums for that.

So if you switched the input to mic level, plugged in the xlr to the input, plugged in the mic, selected the input, turned on the phantom power, turned up the volume and turned up the headphone levels, you are doing everything right. You screwed the hyper capsule on right?

Side note, don't plug or unplug the mic with the phantom power turned to "on" as that can also damage the mic.

Yes, a guitar center is in town...

I guess Ill go there and ask to try a couple cables, hopefully its the cable.

has anyone had any experience with bad Oktavas from sound-room?? I'm pretty pissed here, and Ive got a shoot next week. Could I have blown out the mic by screwing up the phantom power or something?

no
you cant blow the mic connecting the phantom power
that is not tye case , be ready heare much unplesent news , your mic is ok , your camera has aproblem :-)
take the camera with you

Sound-Room sent me a paper printout that showed they tested my mic before they sent it. Did you get one of those? They are also very responsive t email support (but they are in jersey so they are on eastern time). WHere are you located? You may be able to rent something. Try taking your cam down to guitar center to try some other mic.

Take your camera and Oktava with you, if the cable isn't the culprit, try attaching one of their phantom mics to the camera to see if that works. Once you eliminate the cable and camera, and that your settings are all correct, the mic is the only scapegoat left.

Good luck

and try a dynamic mic (doen't need phantom power) too! That way you can see if the input is okay, just not giving you phantom power. You are using a DVX100 right?

Sure you can! Be careful with your phantom power. Never connect or disconnect a mic while phantom power is on.

However, to address the problem at hand... Bluewave, can you tell us the position of your gain dials?

If blowing in the mic (don't!) is showing some signal, it seems unlikely that this would be a cable problem...

Question one: What cam are you using? What setting is that cam in.

Question two: How are you listening to/checking the audio? Headphones?

sorry what exactly you are refefreng for , i connect and disconnect mics under power about 20 years without any single problem acsept when the booman do it when iam with my cans on and that is usially last time he works for me .
dont know what mics you blow out this way but these that i work with survived this abuse for years :-)

if you are refering to pa systems so this is n-1 rull indid
also we are not talking about sending t -12 instead pahantom or frying the ribbons :-)
.
we also not talking about tube :-)
gain dials - this is very long shot :-)
best

Alright, to answer some of these questions:

Sound-Room sent me a paper printout that showed they tested my mic before they sent it. Did you get one of those?

Yes I got the frequency graph or whatever that was.

WHere are you located? You may be able to rent something

I'm in Tampa, Fl. Do you guys know of any major stores that might be located down here for renting? I'll check on it, but to be honest at this point I've run my budget down.

Sane and Wabbit, from what I'm getting from you guys you think it would be best to bring the Camera there and then hook up a Phantom and Dynamic mic (im assuming phantom required phantom power, dynamic doesnt) to see if its my DVX's phantom power thats not functioning. That sounds like a good plan.

Question one: What cam are you using? What setting is that cam in.

Question two: How are you listening to/checking the audio? Headphones?

DVX100B. I've made all the correct settings adjustments (check out the first post)

I'm using headphones. Yes, im sure they work because when I set the Inputs to the onboard mic i can hear the audio.

THE WIERD thing here is that when I said that I blew into the mic (I know its bad to do this, but it was a very light blow) I got some small readings on the camera audio, but heard nothing in my headphones. I think it might have just been some static noise..

Question. Would it be worth (assuming its my phantom power thats screwed up) buying an external phantom power provider from Guitar Center? I think they're like $60.

Are your headphones turned all the way down? Switch the camera into VCR mode and then turn the volume all the way up by using the volume buttons on top of the camera.

If the volume dials on the side of your camera are at 12 o'clock (dials pointing straight up) and you talk into the Oktava from 6" away then the meters on the LCD should be hitting into the reds... if you see that and don't hear anything then it's a headphone problem.

BTW... you're sure the headphones work right?

Hot-patching a mic can damage it, if the pins short out in the proccess. This is almost impossible to achieve with XLR plugs, but is dangerously easy to do using TRS plugs. In other words, be careful running phantom power through a patch-bay, since that's where you're likely to run into hot-patching.
