can anyone tell me where to buy the Oktava MK012 ? Everyone says
they're great mics but I can't seem to find where to buy on the web.
Thanks in advance for your help...oh and thanks to Matt for
bringing these to my attention.
I have both shockmounts and each is priced appropriately... The SSM-1 is adequate, but the KSSM is luxuriously technical and effective. The KSSM is the absolute perfect shockmount for an Oktava... if you go that route be sure to specify soft bands. If you can't afford the K-Tek then the Sabra will get the job done, but if you CAN afford the K-Tek and choose to save the money by going cheaper anyway... you'll regret it if and when you see the KSSM. The K-Tek is premium priced, but it's also "minimalist perfection".
I've heard so much about the k-tek kssm rubber suspension feet breaking during set up. Can you share your experience. Do you take the rubber suspension feet out first and put it on the mic and then on the mount. Or do you try to squeeze the mic in while the rubber suspension feet is on the mount?
I don't recommend the SSM-1. The rubber band suspension takes too long to put on and off because you have to wound it into a figure 8-ish figure everytime you change the mic. And it's not particularly durable either. I accidentally pushed the boompole against the door and it simply snapped off the plastic neck. For the same price I would recommend the Rode SM-3, which is also rubber band suspension but with a much faster setup time and with a convenient camera mounting option if you need it.
If I may interject, I obtained the Okatava MK-012 directly from Ken Heaton of Oktava USA for my upcoming microphone review/test/article. Okatava USA is the only authorized importer of Okatavas in the U.S. The reason I mention this is because there are a number of cheap Chinese counterfeit Oktavas out there. If you are going to buy an Oktava, make sure that you get the real thing.
Not saying that The Sound-Room is selling Chinese knock-offs, I would have no idea. But if you definitively want a genuine Russian authorized-to-sell-in-the-USA by the Russian manuacturer of the MK-012, talk to Ken Heaton at Oktava USA.
According to Okatava USA, there are only five authorized Okatava sources in the U.S. and The Sound-Room is not one of them.
There are hundreds of people here who buy from them and they are great!
I have an SM3 that I use to mount the mic on-cam (if I must do that for b-roll). It works fine, but it is no kssm. It will not work at all well with a BBG either. You get what you pay for...
I wonder who would know, a sound dealer or the company themselves? Contact Oktava USA for the back story. As far as I know, I don't think Ken is on this board regularly, you will have to seek him out. I am not bad mouthing sound-room, I am sure that they are a good retailer but due to the fact that the Oktava is a Russian product, there are concerns that you should have that you might not need to worry about if you were purchasing a German, American or Japanese microphone. I don't see many counterfeit Neumann KMR81i mics but there are counterfeit Oktavas out there, especially on Ebay.
I hav been testing and using dozens of mics, I just think that all of you should be wise consumers. There are some good Chinese made mics out there of various models but you should not purchase one thinking you are getting a Russian made Oktava MK-012.
