Sounds like you're trying to attach a mic clip designed to screw onto a 5/8 inch threaded pin such as found on the end of a mic stand to the grip head of a light stand designed to clamp around the 16mm pin found on a lighting instrument or the shaft of a gobo arm. If you're trying to mount the mic clamp directly to the grip head, you need an adapter spigot for 16mm to 5/8 male, or perhaps easier to find, a spigot for 16mm to 3/8 male plus a 3/8F to 5/8M screw-in adapter . But either one puts the mic directly on the lighting stand - getting it close enough to the subject means the light stand will be in the shot. Better to put a "boom buddy" pole holder in the light stand, holding a horizontal fishpole boom over the camera line so you can fly the mic in-front of and over the subject, getting it within the 20 inches or so distance you need for good sound quality while remaining clear of the shot.

Thanks for the tips! I'm googling those spigots you mentioned but am having a bit of a difficulty finding the right ones, will keep searching...

Manfrotto should have what you're looking for, the combi-boom is supposed to come with the appropriate adapters for both lighting and sound. You can also look at the adapters here, maybe one is what you're looking for.
