Oktava Mk012 and Rycote combo

We're about to make an outdoor trip and we work with the MK012 by Oktava. Nice mic, but a slight breeze and it's a nightmare as it is known for. So we need some windprotection and we've read good stories about Rycote.

The baby ball gag and windjammer are supposed to be very good, but has anyone tried the mic with a Rycote Mini- windjammer? It's only one third of the price...If the difference is significant, I'm willing to pay the price, but otherwise...

And what size would be best to fit the Oktava in that case?

Cheers

I'd get the BBG/Jammer... and yeah, 20mm is correct. The size is labeled 19/20mm.

Think of it this way... a blimp system would cost TWICE as much as the BBG/Jammer! So really it's CHEAP (even though it's not). I've got a pair of both. If you get those then you can use the Oktava outdoors with no problems (up to a pretty strong breeze).

A shotgun gains reach and side rejection... if those two things aren't a problem... then no worries. I'm a big advocate of trying what you have before you buy something else... you may be pleasantly surprised. It's a good idea to have a variety of tools available just in case... and I don't personally RELY on an Oktava like this, but I have successfully used it outdoors many times.

..and of course, having two 012's with BBG/jammers, one can do some pretty amazing ORTF recordings outdoors! ;-)

ortf? whats that? am i dumb that i dont see this? ha ha!

used my oktava for a voice over in a tight spot today... what a cool mic, it did pretty well!

Yes, the Oktava is not ideal in those circumstances, we're thinking of getting a shotgun soon too. But for this thing, I think the Oktava would do the trick as long as it's protected from the wind. Like MattinSTL says, we want to see how this works out before we buy another pricey mic. But the babyball gag probably does not fit shotgun mics, right?

Anyone else have experience with the Rycote mini windjammer?

Cheers for your replies guys.

nope, bbg wont fit shotgun. personally, i love rycote stuff. but ive never tried what you're asking about.

Keep the Oktava inside with the BBG only. Use a shotgun like a 4073a for outdoor use. I have used a windjammer (friends) with the BBG and oktava and have found it restricting especially indoors. I will never use my Oktava outdoors.

Why buy the windjammer when you know you will buy a shotgun. Save the 70 and use that towards a Rycote Softies 97.00 at Location Sound. If you have an important project coming up and can't afford to buy a shotgun, you can rent one for 20.00 or email me and I will loan you a 4073a for free but with a 500.00 deposit.

and that was when everyone called marquee a very nice person. :)

im curious: is there no Rycote Softie type solution for the oktava? why is a BBG seemingly the only way to go?

Thanks for the offer Marquee. Unfortunately we'll be travelling from the Netherlands to Norway, so a stopover in LA was not yet in the planning :)

But timapter just wrote the question I wish I had started with: Is there no simple softie type solution for the Oktava that will work?
