Oktava MK-012 CONFUSION, PLEASE HELP!!!

Ullanta,

I have both caps for the Oktavas and the omni caps are REALLY wide. For a smaller sized group, you could probably do without them. Large group yes.

I'm not sure what you mean… the omnis are omnis! Placed properly, they'll pick up what you want.

As for group size… the OP is talking about s single mic; in general for a "group" you'd either use a stereo technique (there are many, which use cardioids and omnis for all sizes of groups) or for old-timey feel, an omni or bidirectional mic.
So the OP is likely talking about miking single instruments or voices, mikes fairly close, on which case the omni and card caps will provide a lot of flexibility and will in most cases sound better than the hyper.

I'm not sure if we disagree or not, maybe just considering different things. I was thinking about a stereo recording of a small group with a XY scenario as opposed to a single instrument up close. While the omnis could be used, I am suggesting the hypers would be OK for this and money could be saved.

Depends what kind of group.... I should say I am primarily a classical music audio recordist, and for groups of all sizes, omnis are often the first choice. It depends on the performers, the instruments, the particular piece of music, the space, and often on concerns of how things look in a live performance or on video. But for stereo, recording of music, I've never found the Oktava hypers to be preferable to the other caps.... CAN they be used? Sure, on extremely low budget or in desperation when other equipment is unavailable... but then I probably wouldn't use X/Y!
