Oktava at <48v?

Haven't tried it myself (will do so in the next few days), but I've discussed it a bit with people who have. Should sorta work, but not great, as I'd expect.

The MC012 (or K, whichever) is not exactly balanced, and it has a fairly low sensitivity. This combined with the lower voltage of the MicroTrack should tend to lower the signal to noise ratio. So, in some situations, it may be fine, but with the MicroTrack's preamps not being great, the low voltage, the lack of proper balancing, and the low output, in some situations it may get a little too noisy and possibly colored.

Wasn't talking a firmware update but a mod redesign (ala DVX100a). I thought I had heard they were doing that...memory is going these days. Guess my brain ran out of room, has to clear out old stuff in order to bring in new stuff.

The permenant battery was strike one...not providing a full 48v was (is) strike 2, 3, and 4.

Shame. :(

Nah... not quite so struck. The preamps in that kind of device aren't going to be so great anyway, so the phantom issues don't bother me that much... as something you connect good preamps to, or better yet, good preamps and A/D to, it's nice! Think of it as a pure digital recorder with the ability to power some mics in a pinch, and it looks a lot better!

I would think of it as a backup to a main recorder in production environments but the size is one of the things that interested me outside the set. Being able to take it places I wouldn't be lugging around my mixer bag was a real selling point. If I have to take my mixer then i will just bring my 744t too.

Not being able to swap out the battery hurts it's versality for that purpose too.

Cheers

I gave a pair of Oktavas a quick test tonight... not too shabby! I wasn't recording anything that gave the setup a real workout, and I only spent about 2 minutes... but nothing jumped out at me as horrible. I wouldn't toss my Millennias for the MT preamps (or even my Yamaha mixer's), but not as bad as I'd thought and certainly usable.

On the other hand, I used the MT as backup for a long recording today via SPDIF, and it occasionally had some nasty glitches...
