Oktava and DVX set up!

I just received my Oktava (hyper) today. Should I set up the DVX to -60db or leave it at -50db? The -60db has a louder sound, of course. Will it pick up too much room noise with the -60db?

it will pick up the same amount of room noise relative to your sound source.
the -60 db is another 10 db of amplification what usualli not necessary for condenser mics , mostly used for dynamics with very low output ,0.5-2 mv .
condenser usually pull about 10-25 mv for 94 db spl , thats 12-18 db more .
so if you get very strong source with that setting ,you may cause your preamp clip with these aditional 10 db , stay with 50 and rise the level with you audio level potentiometer and not with a preamp gain

I had the -10db pad on. Took it off, left the camera on 50db and it works great now. This is an amazing mic.

I wish there was a bass roll off switch! Oh, well. Can't have it all.

-50db only... the -60db is for dynamic ENG mics like the EV RE50.

If you set the DVX to -60db then it's super-easy to blow the levels... you'll have virtually no control of blown peaks with any condenser.

Thanks! Should I leave the levels in the camera mid way, generally speaking?

its good your levels will go something around -8- -10 dbfs on normal (4th, 5th red dot, eah dot is 2 db)(conversation , that leave you enough headroom if some one rising his voice ,
you can engage the camera limiters ( alc -on)not to hit the brick wall ( 0 dbfs), it starts at -6 dbfs , the 3rd red
the alc wouldnt eliminate preamplifier distortion as it placed behind analog to digital converter , so if you are dealing with loud sounds , put the 10 db pad on your octava and level the audio .
