Oktava and ambient sound/general settings.

I'm a total audio newbie, so please don't brain me out-right.

Is it possible to get ambient sound with an Oktava 012 with the hyper cap? Specifically, what I'd like to do is get some sounds in an underground subway station... the trains going by, the idle chatter of people waiting... generic "restaurant ambience" but at a subway station. Is the Oktava (my only mic right now) capable of this, or will I need something else?

Also, I tested the mic out earlier tonight (with the BBG on it and the little -10db filter on) and it wasn't picking up conversation very well at all. Everything was very quiet, and the mic was actually very close to the person speaking. Are there any specific settings I should change on my DVX when threading this mic into it? I've never had to play with the audio settings on the camera before, so it's a bit baffling.

Thanks in advance.

Take off the -10dB filter. That's only for REALLY loud situation when you want to decrease the mic's sensitivity (like a NASCAR pit or something). That's your problem, for certain.

What he said. -10db cap OFF. It's rarely needed, but when it is you'll be glad you have it.

Regarding the subway sounds... yeah it will do that very well for you... and I'd bring that -10db with you when you go to get those sounds. That may be one of those rare occasions I was talking about.
