Does anyone know anything about the modification for the 012s?
You change out some transformers, caps and a resistor and it's supposed to sound fantastic. Apparently it was covered in the Sept '03 edition of Recording magazine.
There have been recent ebay auctions that insist that the mod kit still applies to current Oktavas... but for the most part it doesn't. Oktava has listened to what their consumers were saying over the years and the mic has evolved... that's why you don't see them for less then $100 anymore... they aren't the same mics they used to be.
I've had several of them apart and back together through the years... noticing these board changes... and if you bought an Oktava in the last 3 or so years about the only thing you'd be able to change out is the FET...
Compare this pic with any of the pics promoting an "upgrade" kit... this is an unmodded newer generation Oktava:
Take note of the parts that the kits say should be replaced and how they identify those components... Can you find any of the poor quality parts that they describe by shape and color here?... or does this one look mostly like the the mics described and pictured as "upgraded"?
Yes, I'd second this. I actually have six MC-012s; I haven't messed with the oldest ones, since they've been reliable workhorses for years. The second pair I bought at Guitar center specifically for modding a few years ago (2 for $50!). These already had half of Dorsey's suggested upgrades in place. My most recent "factory matched pair" was even closer to the "upgraded" specs. So, take a look at your mic before ordering parts!
