What format, resolution etc should i export in? I have shot it in HD, then exported (from what i remember) using a lossless codec (avi). Then burnt it on to a DVD in an SD res which i think has screwed the aspect ratio up a bit. I know very little about the 'post post' processes and never know what to do with the finished product. The video will be sent to tv stations etc. The singer is also asking for the HD version? What format and codec should i use? A Lossless quicktime? I am using Adobe Media Encoder. I just want a nice, high def version of the file that can be played on everyones computer. can anyone help?

Thank you

Is it for review only, or the actual broadcast master? If the latter, then you will be given delivery specs as to what is accepted for air. You don't want a lossless codec for HD as it will be a huge file. Encode to an H.264 type long GOP format for high quality and low data rate.

I have found, for 720P footage, that a Quicktime H264 file encoded at a 3000 or 4000 bit rate (instead of automatic) gets the file size reasonable and looks great.

Thanks. Yeah thats the settings i use if i upload my work to vimeo. (720p, 4000 bit rate h.264) but Michael, what do you mean by a GOP format? And no i don't need the broadcast master just yet, i was just speculating in case it was needed.

MPEG is a Long GOP format (Group Of Pictures) which allows for high picture rate at lower data rates compared to I frame format. DVD, broadcast use varying types of long GOP formats be it MPEG2, MPEG4, etc. So if just for review or online viewing, then your Vimeo settings will be fine.

Standard definition is MPEG2. I don't use Media Encoder, if the DVD only has one or two songs on it, (less than an hour or so), then just go with a CBR encode in the 7500-7800 range. Other factors are whether this is 23.976p native, 16:9 etc. which you would indicate in the encoder for it to set the proper flags during the encode.
