OK a Shadow comeing out of a wall

I want to Make a shadow come out of a wall and turn into a dark figure. I've heard of it being done in after effects using many many keyframes and shooting it four times. I was thinking of green screening a dark figure and adjusting the levels to get rid of folds in his robe and then keyframe the levels and opacity. Is there any other way?

not really seeing what you're trying to do, but couldnt you just use the alpha of the figure you shoot on a green screen and just fill it with black? so you'd have a black outline, ALA ipod commercials. then find some interesting way of transitioning between the alpha and the actual green screen vid you shot???

Well, I was thinking about If it were a horror movie and someone walked by a wall then a figure that started out as a shadow would come out and then gain dimension. I'd just keyframe the opacity of a figure that is shot on greenscreen. But I'd also like to darken the figure Which will probably be wearing a black or dark robe. How would I make the figure completely black?

OK, do you have any suggestions on getting more depth out of the person on the green screen and what is the best way of blending green screen footage with back grouund footage?

Re: OK a Shadow comeing out of a wall

Thank's bluespider I know about lighting but I've heard that you could stand far away and zoom in for more depth, is that true? Is there anyother tricks like that that I can use?

Re: OK a Shadow comeing out of a wall

i think that being far away and zooming actually compresses things in the frame, for instance, if you want it too look like a character is going to get run over by a car. you should use that technique.

Re: OK a Shadow comeing out of a wall

Yeah, it compresses things left to right, top to bottom but it also appears to have more depth, I actually green screened someone today and after adding three color keys to get the green out(the greenscreen I used isn't that great) I lowered the brightness and contrast to -100 and added a gaussian blur and a radial blur with it set to zoom then I adjusted the origin so it had a lighting direction. Then I lowered the opacity and key framed everything so when the person stepped out from the "wall" he became 3 dementional again and it looked pretty cool, I'm gonna tweak it some more because I noticed that some things didn't work like I planned but it is pretty cool.
