Flying Car Gets FAA Approval

" The agency has agreed to classify the Terrafugia Transition as a Light Sport Aircraft, even though the vehicle is 120 pounds too heavy to qualify for that class. The move is crucial to the Transition's chances in the marketplace, because buyers need only 20 hours of flight time (just five of it solo) to qualify for a license to fly a Light Sport Aircraft. Had the agency insisted the Transition was a larger plane, those interested in the flying car would have needed more than double the training time, medical certification, night-time training and more, in order to qualify to fly it. The lower the bar is for potential buyers, the more realistic the Transition becomes for many."

It used to be that we werent safe on the roads..
now we gotta worry about barely experienced "drivers" hitting our homes from the sky.

Very cool, but you're right, could be a very bad idea too.

I'd love to have this though. Would make getting to shoots a lot easier. Plus, you could capture the occasional aerial-fly-over shot when the occasion calls for it.

I'd be willing to bet that cost ($194,000 ) and accessibility to proper runways will keep this from being adopted by the masses. Now add VTOL capabilities, and now we're talking.

Think about it -- look at that thing driving up to the garage. Look at all that white space there, just perfect to put your company logo. When you go to the major ad agency to present yourself as a director (and especially an aerial cinematographer) pull up in that thing. NOBODY would forget who you were. That's a ticket to the big leagues, right there.

'Course, you already have to be in the big leagues to buy a $200,000 flying car, I guess...

Only if you also have the music from that clip playing on a loudspeaker while you drive up and park the thing. That would top it off.

Don't get me wrong that thing looks like major "fun"
but could you imagine 10,000 of those things flying around the skies (if they got the cost down)?

But the sky has limitless 'lanes'

Imagine a 5 lane highway... now imagine if cars were spread out among 50 different lanes based on altitude. Each lane is given about 30-50 feet to stay within... that's only 1,500/2,500 feet (in lanes, of course the first one is a far above our area)... big aircraft can fly up to 20k-30k... That's a lot of aerial lanes.

i think insurance costs would largely limit its use.

now if they get teleportation to work... but can you imagine your 'file' corrupted as it reached the other side? lol

Ryan, I see you are in L.A. Yes, imagine all those lanes with lane diving and cutting people off...ah, the road/air rage that would engender. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Yes but if it were quantum teleportation, where the teleporter makes a "copy" of you at the arrival destination then you're also still at the departure destination.

Overpopulation would rise quickly if we had this tech. Although, you could teleport/copy yourself many times over and eventually crew your entire film with exact copies of yourself. There'd never be any arguments with the crew anymore.

I have been following development of this for a while, if they can get the speed up, increase the payload by a few more hundred pounds and add more range (700 ish nm) I'd buy one. It wouldn't meet the sport class certification requirements but that's prob a good thing.

Here is a video of it flying.

haha that'll be something. i wonder if there would be more arguments? talk about conflict and "man vs himself"...
