I'm not a fan of track-to-track transitions because I like to use the keyers, but everyone edits differently.
On same-track transitions, whether you need to have leader/trailer available on the clip is determined by what the Extend clip at transition setting is set to.
When it's on (checked) then clips will be extended to "cover" the transition overlap. This of course requires that there's enough footage to extend the clips by. The advantage is that the timeline remains a fixed length because you're not "losing" time in the transition overlap.
When it's off (not checked), then clips will not be extended and will be rippled to cover the transition overlap. This means adding a 1-second transition will reduce the timeline length by 1 second, since the second clip of the transition is shifted over.
As for color correction and such, what EDIUS calls White Balance is often what other programs call Color Correction.
