ok...i know its old. but im confused. i dont even have my camera yet, but im trying to figure out the "theorys" of everything before it arrives. now, i understand using 60i allows for the most significant slooow motion effect. as opposed to slowing 30p/24p down 50%. but i was wondering, i want to shoot a project in 24p. should i just switch to 60i in the middle of the project for the slow motion parts, then go back to 24p for the rest? when you import into vegas with a 24p timeline does the 60i automatically become slow motion because of the timeline? should i treat each (24p/60i) as different projects and cut the slow mo in after?
thanks!

Re: oh no..not another slow motion question...

Yes, switch over to 60i to shoot parts that you want to have be in slow motion.

No, Vegas doesn't automatically slow it down -- you have to tell it to do so. If you put a 60i file in a 24P timeline, Vegas will treat the 30 interlaced frames as if they were 24, trying to get the runtime to stay constant. So you have to tell it to play back at a 40% rate, and that'll get you started.

Re: oh no..not another slow motion question...

thanks barry,
i guess ill have to experiment with it.
but that does make sense.
so youre saying you have 24p footage...
once the 60i footage comes itll look messed up...
but you take those parts and tell it to play at 40% and itll look normal...and slow.
ok.
thanks

Re: oh no..not another slow motion question...

Well, it'll look "messed up" in the aspect that the 60i footage will be interpreted as 29.97 "interlaced" frames per second. When you put that on a 24P timeline, it'll have to pick and choose which 24 of the 29.97 frames per second to use. And it may frame-blend to smooth it out, I don't recall.

But when you tell it 40% speed, it does the math and says "oh -- okay, 1 field per frame, you got it." Then it'll de-interlace and interpolate the other field, and if you render on "best" quality, it does a pretty good job of it. There are other options, I remember doing extensive testing and coming away satisfied that 60i->24P was the best solution for smooth slow motion.

Re: oh no..not another slow motion question...

but won't they look different? I mean the 0i will look like video and the 24p will look like film right?.. I'm confused.. (and stupid)

Re: oh no..not another slow motion question...

Once you get through with converting it to slow-motion, you will have converted it to a 24P cadence. So it will blend in nicely.
