Oh baby nice cart!

We are looking for a cart to lug some of our equimpent around. Something like 16X34. Anyone have a favorite?

I found a really nice cart very similar to a Magliner but hundreds less at Home Depot.
Works like a hand truck and converts to a four wheel cart. Nice strudy handles to hang stingers from. Love it. Under $300.

I like the Rock N Roller carts. With their telescopic frames they're great for transport when space is at a premium. I have an R12 with 4 pneumatic tires.

I'll second that - all depends on what you're looking for from a cart.
If it's strictly for transport then the Rock N Roller's are great, especially for a one man band type of scenario.

But if you're looking for something to transport gear AND to use on set you may need something more substantial.

I do love my rock n roller (r12 as well - gotta have the big wheels). For the price its fantastic. It could be built a heck of a lot better, but it would probably cost a heck of a lot more... Definitely gets the job done. They've got a shelf kit you can add on if you really wanted to use it on set. If you wanted to use it alot though I'd be tempted to look towards magliner and all those fancy accessories.

We have both a small rock n roller and a full magliner with two shelves and all the attachments, and I gotta say the rock n roller gets used about 5x more than the magliner. It's so small and convenient and yet carries soooo much. On bigger shoots it's nice to burst on the scene with the authority of a magliner, but it's also nice to pack everything into a car instead of the van or truck.

I had an original Rock and Roller cart (gray with the red trim) that I used and abused for 10 years and dragged all over the world. One of the best products I have ever bought. Some idiot at my old production company then ran it over with their car and basically destroyed it.

They ordered me a new Rock & Roller to replace it. In the first month...

1. Load capacity is rated for 500lbs, I had less than 200 on it when the front plastic (used to be metal) casters broke. Dana B Goods, the distributer, then sent me some of their heavy duty casters as replacements for free. Nice people, good service.

2. Same situation two weeks later, had to park about half a mile from a location in Santa Monica (there is no parking in Santa Monica, it's ridiculous) Unload full shoot gear onto cart, lock truck, walk away with cart, rear tires then explode, leaving me stranded on Santa Monica Blvd. with a full load of about $50,000.00 worth of Varicam and lighting gear. So I have to leave producer with cart and gear, run back to truck and re-load entire gear into truck. Then we have to hand carry all gear up three flights of stairs, elevator is broken. What a nightmare day.

3. Go to Home Depot, Harbor Freight and discover that hubs and wheel size for rear tires on Rock & Roller are NOT standard sized, they are custom so you can only order replacements from Dana B. Goods.

4. Next shoot, full load once again. Tug to pull load over small parking lot speed bump and handle bends about 4". So now handle, while still functional, flops around.

5. Non-slip tape on main load bearing rails peels off the first time I place cases on dolly.

I wish that I could recommend that you buy a Rock & Roller. I do own two of the $99.00 R&R Minis, I fly with them and use them for small loads. They are awesome, no problems with them yet. But the larger sized ones? There was no comparison to my original R&Roller cart. The new ones must be built in China of inferior components because in my experience, the new ones are junk. The company that makes them, Dana B Goods, great, nice people, but the newer carts are just not nearly what the old ones were. My old R&Roller never even broke anything and I abused with overloading it, schlepping it down dirt and unpaved rough roads, the thing was indestructable except with a 4,000 lb car! I really miss it.

Unless you are getting the Mini, I have to recommend that you consider other products.

I should tell Dana B Goods that I would have happily paid double the price of the RR12 to get the same quality as my original R&Roller. You can't take a once great product and keep the price the same but lower the quality by 50% and not expect unhappy customers. As I said, pros will easily pay double the price for quality. Same issue with the new Litepanel Micro. Great idea, bad execution as far as quality, built like fragile junk. I would pay 50% more for the Micro to get regular Litepanel DV quality in that smaller form factor. Why are all of the maufacturers building junk at their medium and lower price points? Pros will pay more for quality and consumers don't care if the product is junky by pro standards.
