OfflineRT?

Bandersnatch

New member
I've never used this feature on FCP, so I'm a bit afraid, because there seems to be very little written about it. However, my next project has hours and hours of footage, and this seems the most realistic and economical way.

Has anyone captured 24p (standard) material as OfflineRT? I guess what I"m asking is -- this IS a possible option, is it not? It shouldn't effect such things as pulldowns, will it, particularly if you intend to edit in a 23.97 timebase? Has anyone run into horrible issues?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,
B.

Re: OfflineRT?

Yikes -- sorry... I haven't tried in 24P. I'm thinking since it is REALLY in 29.97 anyway you shouldn't have any problems. Oh -- and don't edit 24P standard in a 23.98 timebase!! FCP doesn't have the pulldown removal for that.

How many hours is hours and hours? Don't you have 100 gigs on any drive anywhere?

Re: OfflineRT?

The issue for me is that the footage I am getting was shot on 24p standard, when it probably should have been shot 24pa. That issue is moot now though, as we will have 50+ hours doc footage. Which is something like 600GB of space. It seems much more realistic to capture the footage at low res. Ultimately, we want to finish/output at 24fps, for a 24fps DVD.

I was advised on another message board, to capture at 29.97fps, then do a reverse pulldown in CinemaTools to get me back to 24fps (or rather, 23.97). Then I can edit in a 24fps timebase.

Now, thinking of adding OfflineRT into the mix. I feel it must be able to be done, because how do people work in 24p HD? HD requires massive amounts of HD space, no?

Would you advise, or is it possible, to just edit in 29.97, and then do a pulldown AFTER the fact, to try to get back to 23.97? That sounds like it would get messy, but is this a possibility?

Anyway, anyone out there who may have worked in 24p and OfflineRT, ... please send your thoughts my way!

Re: OfflineRT?

I did it in 24P and it worked fine.

1. Capture with offlineRT photo jpeg.
2. Edit
3. recapture (automatically) at high res.

The FCP manual describes this, as do several books.

It worked fine for me, although the photo jpeg resolution means that you're editing smaller images, which makes things a bit less precise.

But, it made it possible to do everything on a Powerbook G4.
