Offline to Online with P2

Anyone thought about the implications for offlining/onlining with P2. Obviously with tape in FCP i create an offline project and reconnect the media at online res but i cant get my head around the P2 intergration in this way (unless im being completly stupid). Anyone care to enlighten me ie. Barry:huh:

Been thinking i know its possible to downconvert to dv onto tape from P2 with the HVX but is it possible to do a downconvert to P2 to dv also. So in effect you would have your DVPROHD (online) and DV (offline) on the same card with timecode intact. Obvioulsy takes up more room but is it possible.

Why would you offline? FCP on a fast system can handle nearly a dozen streams of DVCPRO-HD in realtime, or so the Apple guys tell me. Drive space is cheap... I can't see why someone would bother with offline/online anymore...

I suppose im stuck in thinking about this in traditional terms and i could slap on a graid to a laptop and edit natively but im getting my head around possible future uses of P2 with higher bandwidth larger filesize video.

What if i wanna do a rough cut on location on a laptop?
I've heard tell of up to six streams in realtime off a high-end powerbook.

With 100gb of storage, you'd have room for 90 minutes of full-res footage, or almost four hours of 720/24p. I wouldn't even bother with thinking about offline/online, just go online. You don't need a RAID for DVCPRO-HD.

I appreciate what your saying Barry about why would you need to do it but CAN it be done an offline/online stratagy seems like a limitation of P2 to me.

Why would it be a limitation? You can make downconversions if you want, but it'll take time to do so -- you can downconvert from P2 to the DV tape, but it'll take realtime efforts to do so. Then you'd have to capture the DV tape, which will also take time. Then you'd eventually have to go back and conform the footage, which will take time & hassle... so yes, I'm sure you could do it. I am just saying that it would probably be an infinitely simpler workflow to avoid offline/online and just always work in the online domain.
