Offline Editing for HVX footage

I was wondering if anyone who uses this method could share their workflow. What do you use to downconvert your footage and what do you downconvert it to? After you finish your offline edit, do you use the EDL to help resynch the original footage?

I'm just trying to visualize what would be a good way to use this process. I haven't actually done an offline edit yet and would like to use it for upcoming work, but I want to make sure I'm covering all my angles. I'd hate to get the footage exactly how I want it and then run into problems when I try to swap it out with the higher resolution footage.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why do you need to do an offline edit? Computers these days can handle most resolutions up to HD in realtime depending on your system. Maybe some more specifics will help...

Say I wanted to edit on-the-go on my Powerbook and then later on do the online edit on a more powerful G5 desktop.

I haven't tried this yet with imported P2 footage, but you should be able to use the media manager in FCP to create an OfflineRT HD copy of your clips and edit those clips. Then use the media manager to convert your edit back to HD. I'm in the middle of this process doing an SD edit on my powerbook. The FCP manual explains using media manager for such purposes very thouroghly. I haven't gone round trip yet myself. :) You should definately practice the procedure with something simple just to make sure you know how it works. Before a major project.

I've been doing some RT qualification testing on everything from a 12" PowerBook to a Quad G5 (3 laptops, 3 desktops) - you can do basic DVCPRO HD editing (even 1080i) satisfactorily on a surprisingly low end Mac (if it is of recent vintage). Apple's specs call for a 1.0 Ghz G4 and 1 GB of RAM to edit HD. My 12" PowerBook was doing just fine (I'll post test results when done at HD For Indies). But unlike other formats, P2's recyclable nature drastically changes the ramifications of offline workflow - you can certainly use Media Manager to make a more "lightweight" copy of your media to edit with, and then relink it later (so long as you don't rename source clips in the Finder), but the benefits are kinda small - if you have a decent Mac and a reasonable amount of storage (hullo, external FireWire drive/s), there hassle and ROI doesn't seem to justify doing an offline. Think of it this way - how are you going to go online other than by file linking? Can't recapture from tape, since the P2's were wiped. And even if you did, I'm not positive the workflow would all be OK. Somebody messed with this more, tested it? I need to dig around on the forums on here more.

Jarred - P2 offline, archive, recapture/relinking experiences or threads? All Seeing Jarred, are you reading this? Shall I make imaginarily disparaging comments about your girlfriend to incur your wrath to see if you're reading this?

; )

(not really - she's a total sweetie, she roxors)
