Official Tripod F.A.Q's

I picked up a Manfrotto 701HDV head to use with my Manfrotto 055fm3 carbon fiber legs and the rig seems really stable with the lightweight HPX170. I shoot mostly nature and also public meetings with Q & A for conservation groups. The cheap Manfrotto setup is extremely portable and stable. The lightweight 701HDV head is smooth enough for what I do.

Libecs are really good for a cheap tripod. Get a Sachtler if you want the best but if you are broke, the Libec would be next choice.

What kind of tripod would fit EX3 with Letus 35mmUltimate adapter with on board monitor better??
I am thinking Oconnor brand. Where can I get those?
My range would be $2000 ish.

Thanks in advance.

You can't get an new O'Connor for $2k, they start at about $4,500.00 and go up from there. If you hunt around though, there are always old O'Connors available but they are generally 50s or other huge, heavy tanks. Not really that practical to drag around for run and gun, although if you have PAs and are shooting a film. the bigger and heavier the tripod, the better. If you could find a used 1030HD, that would be sweet for that setup but they are quite rare to find used.

I love O'Connors, it's what I used in film school, they are really well engineered American classics. If I had a bigger rig like a RED, that is what all of the RED people use.

Has anyone use the Vinten Vision AS heads?

I've heard a lot of great things about them, but I feel like some of it might just be hype. I'm interested in trying one out, but I'd like to get some opinions on them.

How have they improved on the Vision heads ?

Probably stupid newb question: Can a camera be too LIGHT for a head?

Probably stupid newb question: Can a camera be too LIGHT for a head?

I'm getting the Panasonic AG-HMC40, which is a little over 3 pounds with battery. If I add another pound or even two for XLR/phantom power adapter and possibly a shotgun mic I'm probably still under 6 pounds.

I can see that a fluid head designed for up to 8 pounds would be problematic with a 20 pound camera. But, is the opposite true?

My question: Will a fluid head made to support 10 or 20 pounds cause problems using this light a set-up or is it not relevant?

Thank you.

Yes, it would. The point of a head designed for a certain weight range is your ability to counterbalance it properly. A camera that falls below the weight range cannot be balanced, and you'll always be fighting the head, especially on tilt.

I expected that to be the case, but wanted input with those familiar with the gear. Thanks for the quick response.

Bowl adapter for Sachtler head

Bowl adapter for Sachtler head

Is there such a thing that will permit me to place an FSB 8 (75mm bowl) head into a 100mm bowl tripod?

I'll be damned if I can find it on the Sachtler website; clarity of describing their products is not their strong suit!

If there is such an adapter, has anyone used it and does it work properly?

Here's what I'm after: I've been shopping for a head and stix to add to my inventory for my DSLR to ride atop. I already have a DV8/100 head/legs combo I like. My initial research brought me back to a DV10 (the DV8 is discontinued) for consistency of controls, quality and bowl size, since I also have a 100mm bowl slider. But the DV10 is just a little more than I really need for DSLR (max load I'll have is about 15lbs) and at $4300 is more than I want to spend on a 2d tripod.

Hence my search brought me to the FSB8, which can handle the lighter capacity a bit better but has the same controls and quick release plates I'm used to. Problem is it's 75mm not 100 mm and I'll need some form of adapter if I want to put it into my slider or use it on my existing legs.

I'm told Manfrotto makes some bowl adapters but are they any good for this purpose; do they affect the functionality of the head?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Bob

Out of those three the Sachtler would be my choice. I like mine.

Looking for a decent fluid head and legs for a HPX170.
Now the kicker comes with the fact that I'd like to be able to put a small-ish jib (ProAm 12 footer) on the there too!

  • I this a completely rediculous notion?
  • Should I get a c-stand for the jib and worry about getting a decent tripod/head just for the camera?
Any thoughts/ideas/ridicule would be great.

:dankk2:

Been shooting with the FSB-8 today switching from 5dMKII to hpx370.

counter balance 1 = 5dMKII 24-105
CB 2= 5d 70-200 2.8
CB 4= HPX370 w/ Batt

10 total counterbalance settings- this head is extremely versatile. 170 would be great on this.

There is just a little bounce (only noticeable at the far end of the lens, and very very minor), but that comes from the tripod torquing. It's the packaged 75mm ball CF Speed locks. On 100mm sachtler CF legs with bowl adapter there is no bounce at all.

Very smooth head, best I've used in this price range for sure. It's a Sachtler- feels just like its big brothers.

I recently purchased a Redrock Encore and it uses the Manfrotto Rapid Sliding PL Plate. Works fine, except that the darn little 'camera stabilizer' is not there so I don't have that little brass piece that 'snaps' into the camera itself. Do they sell this replacement part or should I just get a whole new plate (they're only like 40 bucks)
