Official Mic / Wireless / Shotgun/ Boom / Boom Pole / Microphone F.A.Q.

Hi everyone. I got a small question, which I haven't been able to find the answer to.

I currently own a Canon HV30 and I recently ordered a Canon DM-50 microphone, which is on it's way to me. The Canon HV30 hasn't got anything to put an XLR thingy in.

Soon, I will be getting a handheld microphone and a Juicedlink. I was wondering if I can also connect the DM-50 to the Juicedlink, perhaps through an adaptor of some sort, so that I can use the Juicedlink's pre-amp functions on the DM-50. On some forums people say you don't need to plug any cables into your camera with the DM-50, because the audio will run through the hot shoe. Sounds kinda fishy/weird to me, but I can't check yet. Other sites say it has got a mini-jack plug.

Does anyone know something more about this?

I used to own a recording studio before we setup as a full service Video Production company/Ad Agency. I am blessed, as I was able to hang onto a nice assortment of Mics. From the previously mentioned Neuman KM184's to Higher end shotguns and Dynamic Mics, to several of the 100 dollar large-diaphragm Chinese-made Studio Wannabee's that are available at any big box guitar store.

The Neumans are nice, you get what you pay for. Awsome crowd and concert mics. I use a Sennheiser MKH170 for all of my booming. Im very pleased with both the high freq and low end Freq response. I always use it in conjunction with a Tram TR50 lapel. (no two trams are alike, listed to them before you buy, I have very breathy trams and some that have very limeted high end, they are not very consistant IMHO, but great mics)

If I were on a 200 dollar or-less budget, I would take a good look at the Octava MC012's with the Capsule kits. I use several of them constantly. They are a poor mans Neuman KM184. You can use them for Dialoge, music, nature, ETC. They will not replace a shotgun, but IMHO, are the best bang for the buck for a multi purpose condenser.

With any cheap Russian or Chinese made 100 dollar condenser mic, I strongly urge you to go to the store and listen to them. Pick through the lot if the salesperson allows you. Just because they are cheap, does not mean you will not find something that will work and work well. I picked through 7 different octava's of the same model, and I swear each had it's own unique sound and pickup response. The time was worth it, I found a pair that matched fairly closely. I also brought a splitter with inverted wiring to make sure the two would not cancel each other out when I tested them. That too was well worth bringing with me,.

Mics are like tools, there is a mic for every job and scene. There is no One Size fits all. Audio seems to be the most neglected and misunderstood part of most Indy productions as well as corporate Video's. It will make or break your project. Just like cameras, not every camera is going to cover the needs of every situation. A good Dynamic Mic or two, A Short and Long Shotgun, a few condensers along with a good couple lapels in both omni and Directional pickup patters will round out any situation.

If you cannot do this, buy a short shotgun and hire a dedicated audio person for your tasks. He or she will have what you need, and you will always come home with awsome sound to fit your awsome shots.

Food for thought

Wireless Lavs HVX200

Wireless Lavs HVX200

Hey guys, I am looking for some wireless audio equipment. I have an Panasonic HVX200 and need 3 wireless Lavs, and I'm assuming a wireless receiver that connects into the audio jack of the HVX itself. If anyone can make recommendations as to what I need, etc.

I would appreciate the help.

Just to give you an idea, we are shooting something similar to "The Office". A camera that is essentially shooting at a copule of characters on screen at a given time.

Thanks again
