Official Book cover

Re: Official Book cover

Thank you John. As I mentioned, at least I tried your tips ::)
Any way. I'm going to change the text has you mentioned. It made a little difference. See, something we can agree on. ;D

Re: Official Book cover

Charles,

I wasn't bashing you or your book in any way... I wish you the best with it, and was only offering my opinion based on my experiences in the field...

I can't wait to get a copy of it when it's out..

Re: Official Book cover

Charles go ahead and send it to the printer already! It is the pictures inside that counts. I'm drooling all over this and it is not even a Playboy ;D

Re: Official Book cover

Kai,

Don't worry. I know you werer't bashing the book. I take all critics in good judgement.  ::)
I was just expressing the down side of things in the real world. Not offended at all. I'm glad for any critics I can get as long as they don't get too offensive :P

Elvis, you're nuts ;D

I'm also looking into self publishing internet firms as well. Taylor has mention LuLu as an alternative. If all fails with the publisher I had in mind then it will be the way to go.

BTW, I just got an e-mail from Ira Tiffen, yes, that's right. He's the owner of the company that has the rights to the Steadicam system. We've been e-mailing each other and he has passed on my request to Mr. Brown, the inventor of the steadicam, to see if he would be so kind as to autograph a few copies of the book when it's done.

I'm crossing my fingers to see if this will really happen. ::)

Re: Official Book cover

Hi Charles,
I have just moved my computer to my new temp office and the IT guy is away so I can't get my email set up to send to you off line...so there are two great books on self-publishing.

The Bible is by Dan Poynter
The Self-Publishing Manual: How to Write, Print, and Sell Your Own Book, 14th Edition
by Dan Poynter
This book will saveyou years of research...he's the man.

This is the second book I recommend
Complete Guide to Self Publishing: Everything You Need to Know to Write, Publish, Promote, and Sell Your Own Book (Self-Publishing 4th Edition)
by Tom Ross, Marilyn Ross

If you are just going to buy 1 buy Dans book.
Also if your bool is four color get it printed in HK by Regal, I researched this extenvily and had them send me samples and also contacted their clients in the US and had them send samples.

Because of the type of specialized book you are doing it only makes sense to self publish...I will have more info soon.

Cheers

Re: Official Book cover

Thankd Taylor. Is Regal in Hong Kong a internet base publishing firm like Lulu? Do they have a website? I just read on LuLu that they do color too.

Never mind I just found their website. It seems that they only cater to other large publishing firms from aroung the world Taylor. I don't think they would cater to me.

Re: Official Book cover

Charles for sure Regal will deal with you, but still it might be too small for it to be worth it for you. I had them quote 1000, 2500 and 5000...no problem.
And yes LULU does do color....and they are POD (print on demand) and can handle fullfilment to your customers.
Also look up Tafford Publishing they are out of Canada, the US and the UK. Good people. They can also do 4 color books.

http://www.trafford.com/

also here is my little photosite on LULU

" I had them quote 1000, 2500 and 5000...no problem. "

Are those the amount of copies or price in dollars? Also, what are those quotes for? Sorry, I just need you to explain a little better :-[

BTW, thanks for the link. I'll check it out as well. I was wondering how good LuLu binding is as well as the paper. HK publishing seems to do hard covers, which is pretty good. I've written them to ask for some quotes. Still waiting...

Re: Official Book cover

Sorry Charles those are the number of books...

I was also thinking it would be awesome if the Man Garrett wrote the intro to your book!!!!

Let me know what other question you have re self-pub..
So, am I any closer to buying your rig now ;D

I think that's a long stretch but would be great. :-/

Yeah, by a long shot ;D

Re: Official Book cover

Taylor, I'm still waiting for a reply from Regal. In the mean time I'll ask you since you're more familiar with them. Those quotes, were they based on the minimum amount of books that could be printed when placing an order? I take it that they don't print on demand, now do they?

Re: Official Book cover

Hi Charles,
Regal is a classic printing company no POD. The other are POD and they do color...the catch with POD is the profit is much lower for you..but it takes alot of the workload off of you.
What is hard is to define how many books you expect to sell realistically, the shelf life of a book like yours(since a book like your has never been done) shelf life is good.
Who are the consumers of your books
How you will market your book

If you do it for love or money...
If you do it for love go POD
If you do it for money self publish and go Regal

Also if you research POD printing there are alot of companies,
but trafford and lulu and xlibris are the best...good color printing BUT not hardcover

With Regal they can print anyway you want. If you get 1000 printed with Regal it will cost you more per unit but at least you don't have all this inventory sitting there rotting..

On a shooting note, going out to do a bunch of test stabalizer/glidecam shooting on Friday...will give you a link Charles. Also Charles are you going to NAB?

Re: Official Book cover

Thanks a lot Taylor. I still havn't received anything from them. Any how, I'll check the publisher here on my side and see what they are going to offer me. It's all for the love Taylor. ;)

Nope, I won't be going. BTW, when is it? I havn't been keeping track. Lots to do.

Let me know how the test shots come out.

Beware of publishers, especially if they are not knowlegable about your genre of book, maybe speak to focal press, or a film book publisher.

It's all for the love Taylor.

Yes, love is good, but not when someone is not marketing your book the way you would, and then they are taking 70-80% of you profit....and they have an exclusive with you meaning you can't even sell it...be careful.

Let me know how the test shots come out.

Had a great shoot today, I will upload either this weekend or early next week...happy, it's coming, slowly.

Re: Official Book cover

Thanks. I think I'll be going with LuLu or Trafford. I've been reading alot on their site. The info is mind boggling. So damn much. I'm trying to compare the two and I may just sway to trafford because they offer a book size closer to the size I'm looking for. That is: 8,5 x 9. I think the their format is 7,5 x 9.

I'll have to e-mail some questions and answers to see if I understand what they are offering. Too much info.

Re: Official Book cover

No problem charles, my email is now working properly so if you want to email me there it stops us from boring the rest of the users....
Yes the info is very full on, but Trafford are good guys, I have talked with the president at length about my book project. It was nice to speak to man who is very busy and runs a business in 3 countries...and had the time for me.

Get there sample color kit to make sure you are happy with there printing quality.

Hey glad to help you out...actually i think i still owe ya... ;D
