Official Book cover

Re: Official Book cover

That rig is sweet!

Is book oging on the market?  What I mean is, is this book cover going to represent?

I think it still needs work.  :-/

Specifically in the FONT design area and I also think the rig should stand alone and not be shown with the background image.

I would suggest more use of negative space and balancing the elements. I think the purchaser of the book should be drawn to the RIG and the RIG alone.

I think with a bigger font it would add a nice balance and I would 86 the background image.

2 cents.

Re: Official Book cover

Thanks Johan.

John. Thanks for the tip. The guy still has some work left on it but what font size do you recommend?

...and what do you mean by:

"... and I would 86 the background image" ?

Let me know and if I like it I'll give it a try and if I don't then it will remain as it is.

Re: Official Book cover

My personal idea is:

86 (Remove) the background fade image.

Drop the RIG image onto the Left Side of cover. The image would dominate the left side of cover and be the CENTRAL FOCAL POINT.

Pay close attention to balance on all sides of LEFT COVER. Utilize negative space for proper balance.

I would drop the FONT to the lower right part of the cover. But still above the BASE of RIG.

Not exacty sure of size of font, but I would also keep it straight and not arc'd. I would also use a sans serif font as not to detract from the RIG (which is kick ass by the way!)

Appreciate you being receptive and just my 2 cents (which doesnt mean anything!)

Re: Official Book cover

Hello Charles How close are you to publishing it?
And I agree with John. the cover does not do your rig justice. Charles are you going to sell your rig. I had to send my whole rig back for some fine adjustments. Not very happy right now. 8)

Re: Official Book cover

Hey Charles,
Looks good, man I love your rig. I've got to modify my sled like yours, I'm really impressed...which rig is that one? Number 8 or current.
Cover would look even better with a DVX mounted on it with a fat mattebox :o

Can hardly wait....

Too bad Elvis, you better work Charles before I beat ya too it 8) Your flying a Magiqam???

How are you gong to sell the book...and who is doing the printing and fullfillment...don't forget lulu.com

Elvis:

Hello Charles How close are you to publishing it?

I'm expecting around summer or ending part.

And I agree with John. the cover does not do your rig justice.

Wow! I didn't think the cover is that bad. Like I told John. I'll try his methods and if I like it I'll change but it should not be such a big deal. I think if a person is interestd in something, regardless, he or she will buy it because of the subject matter and not because of how the cover looks. Remember the saying: Don't judge a book by it's cover.  ;)
Any way thanks for the comment. I test John's tips, if I like it than you guys win, if not, then I think you will have to hate it more  :D ;D

Charles are you going to sell your rig.

At this point in time, I don't think so. Thanks for the interest. Will let you know if I ever decide.

Sorry to hear. What was the problem?

To Taylor:

Looks good, man I love your rig.

Thanks for the comments Taylor  ::) Really appreciate it.

...which rig is that one? Number 8 or current.

This the current rig.

I've got to modify my sled like yours, I'm really impressed

Go ahead, as I have told many, knock yourself out

Cover would look even better with a DVX mounted on it with a fat mattebox

...or a 16mm ;D

How are you gong to sell the book...and who is doing the printing and fullfillment...don't forget lulu.com

I've got a publisher here who is interested. I just have to get the book done and take it over to them.
I havn't forgotten about LuLu. One think about it is that they only allow a particular book type to be in a particular format than the one I want. I'll have to read through everything just to make sure though.

Very true! PArticulary with this kind of product!

Re: Official Book cover

Hi Charles,
i had research Self publishing very closely, and have a great contact on printing out of HK. Let me know if you want that info...
Also what do you normally fly off the rig????
Can you also post or send to me directly a high res picture of your rig, I need to get a closer look at that beautiful sled...

Re: Official Book cover

Charles, I just thought the background shots a little distrackting. Apparently he got parts from another supplier and they did not fit well together. I was at the point of adding my TFT monitor and battery. >:(

Re: Official Book cover

Taylor, go ahead a send me that info. BTW, what is HK?

I've flown a DVC pro before. Now that I have a Canon xm-2, I'll have to make a weight plate.

Re: Official Book cover

Hong Kong...really reputable company I did lots of research on references. i will send out to you off-line in the next day or 2 as i am moving....
With a specilized book like this Self-Publishing is the way to go. I can also give lots of adivce on this...and in return you can give me your rig. ::)

...if only it was that easy ;)

Re: Official Book cover

Well John, I tried you tips about the image but felt the present design is the one I like. Sorry buddy. ;) The text design, I think I might change. Lowering the the font a bit etc. as you mentioned.

Thanks for the tips.

Re: Official Book cover

Charles... the "don't judge a book.." theory works well when dealing with people, but from a marketing stand-point, the perceived value of a product far outweighs the content when it's on the shelf. If a customer sees a book on the shelf and has never heard of it, it's the cover/artwork that provides that initial interest to pick it up and check out what it has to offer. THEN they realize the content is worth buying. The cover is what grabs them in. Same situation as a business model. You can have the most incredible product or service in the world, but if no-one knows about it, or if you can't generate any interest in it, noone will give you any business. I'm not saying your product isn't great... it looks to be great and I hope to read it, but you have to think from the consumer's point of view. I've done product design and packaging for years now... I've come to see that clients who decide to use their own opinions and design preferences, based on their own likes/dislikes, tend to receive lackluster results in the end, vs using the opinions/skills of experienced marketing/design professionals. You have to see the project from the viewpoint of the end user. Just like I wouldn't try to correct the guy who's attaching the bungee cord to my feet as i'm standing 500 feet in the air "because I don't like how it looks on me"... That was a ridiculous comparrison, but the point is, pro designers are good at what they do, and writers are good at what they do.. it's that collaboration of talents and experience that leads to a successful product.

"just my 2 cents"... ;)

Re: Official Book cover

Alright Kai. Thanks for your imput. You make some good points but you cannot please everyone. You(probably) or John may not like the cover but there are probably 10 more who like it. now you tell me who am I suppose to please ???
The two that do not like the design or the 10 that has no problem and think it's the best cover they've seen?

It's not easy pleasing everyone but like I mention before and will mention again. If you're interested in a product or in my case, a subject matter than regardless of the cover, you will still purchase it. I've bought some books which cover looks absolutely horrible but I was more inerested in the content than the cover.

It's true that the cover will lash out at you and draw the potentional buyer but if he's not interested in the subject than it doesn't really matter how the cover looks.

See my point?
