Off the Shelf Computer System

My HP P4 system has reached life support status. I'm looking to upgrade.

I've looked at the "build a monster system" threads. I'm looking for suggestions for a Vegas "off the shelf" system.

Any Dell recommendations? Any other systems? Any threads I missed?

My system was an HP P4, 2.67hz, 2 MB ram, 256 nvidia geforce 6800GT card. Lot's of drive space. I'm using Vegas 7, and on occasion Edius 2.5. I input to a firewire card using a JVC HR-DVS2 deck. I hardly ever hook up my DVX, but just use the tape.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and would like to stay with it.

Suggestions, recommendations and horror stories welcomed.

Pretty much any Core2Duo machine, with independent Video Ram and 2 gig of ram is going to absolutely thrill you compared to where you're at. Throw a couple sata drives in and you'll be amazed at how quiet your machine is. If you're looking off the shelf, you might as well go to best buy or see what's brewing on newegg.

Dude,

The system you have listed should be far from needing Life Support. I would recommend reloading the OS and seeing if you still feel like you need a new PC. (Of course backup all your important data before doing this) Once the OS is loaded, only use the PC for editing and don't load all the other software that can cause it to have issues. I wouldn't even surf with it given the choice.

If you are just looking for a new PC, you can always find good deals through Dell. My 2 big complaints with Dell used to be the lack of extra HDD space and lack of HDD cooling. With 1TB drive now out, you won't hear me talk about space...but you will still hear the same song about cooling them.

Also, if you are going to get a new PC....make sure the chip has at least 4M L2 cache. The Core2's with 2M shared aren't much better than your P4. Also see if you can step into the DDR3 arena. Dunno if you are looking to go that high end yet, but might as well plan to keep this one a while vs. being in the same situation in a few years.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just got in from a businees trip and looked in. I'm going to try the reloading the entire OS and start over.

I'd like a new system, but I can wait.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm going to anyway. My video card died and I stuck an old one I had lying around in. But my machine is going to be used in a startup business. I haven't kept up with the PC world for a while I built this computer about 4 years ago. It's configured as follows

Mother board supermicro X5DA8
CPU Dual 2.4ghz xeon p4
scsi drives
2 gb kingston memory

I know I need a video card, any suggestions? Do I need to upgrade the computer other then that? The business will be mainly legal videos and some low end commercials. Plan to run vegas 8, sound forge and possibly Adobe cs3. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

That should run it just fine. You don't have to upgrade to a nicer video card, but you will prob want to after running V8 for a while.

Only issue I see will prob be HDD space as SCSI drives are generally very small by todays standards. Might want to consider different HDD setup. I know you will be confined in that area by the restrictions of your board, and since that is a server board I don't know what option you have on there.

You could do a USB or FireWire external HDD for quick space, but I find them to be way too slow. Either a cheap-o PATA RAID setup or any of the new SATA drives are plenty fast enough for video now days.
