Odyssey 7q and Samsung 860 EVO 1TB

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I couldn't find a dedicated monitor/recorder forum. Anyway...

I picked up two 1TB Samsung EVOs, which are supported with the 2018.03 firmware update for the Odyssey, and tried plugging them in. One was actually DOA, and I just stopped by the Samsung service centre this afternoon to hand it in. The other, though, seems to work fine, at least when connected externally to a PC or Mac. Read/Write speeds are comparable to the 512GB 860 PRO that I also have, and which works fine with the Oddyssey.

The 1TB Evo goes like this: Insert, says unknown format, format, tries to initialize, gives an 'S1 FS: E=5,L=2370 S: E=0,L=0' error code (I presume?), and then eventually goes to sleep trying to initialise the disk.

Thoughts??

Thanks

Got a reply from CV:

Thank you for contacting Convergent Design, Mike.

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulties with those SSDs. When Convergent Design qualified the 860 EVO SSD, they had serial numbers starting with S3 and they worked with our recorders. Since that time Samsung has changed the serial numbers to start with S4 & S5 and made changes internally to the SSD and our recorders no longer recognize them as qualified. As a result Convergent Design now only recommends the Samsung 860 PRO 512GB & 1 TB SSDs.

We are trying to get our web page updated with these changes.

This is a little annoying, as at least here in South Korea, the 1TB 860 EVO is by far the best bang-for-the-buck option out of all the compatible Samsung SSDs, and it sure ain't rocket science to update a website.
Sure enough, my drives start with 'S4,' so there's my reason. I'm now interested in finding a used 'S3' version just to test if it will actually work.

Take care, folks.

Pretty common occurrence in technology history.

Meaning...a company makes a product --> the product only supports a certain form of media (originally it was only proprietary) or something else --> company stops making product and developing it (what CD has done with the 7Q) --> new technology (in this case media) isn't compatible with it.

It's nice they are still answering e-mails and supposedly still supporting warranties, but I have a feeling all of that 7Q info on the website will eventually be gone too (IMO).

Yeah, I understand the issues. And for a product that was released 8ish years ago, I guess things aren't too bad!
But their website really is a mess, and I just wish that they'd updated it as soon as they'd known of the issues with the S4/S5-serial drives. Seems like it should have taken a web designer all of 15 minutes to do...
Anyway, I guess I've now got two 1TB SSDs to put into a RAID 0 array to edit the giant files coming off the C500...

I’d be very wary of the sustained data rates on the EVO drives anyway. Particularly if you’re recording something as hefty as 4k raw.

The 2-bit MLC NAND in the Samsung Pro drives is something you can depend on for sustained throughput. So always better to play it safe where recording media is concerned.

Man did this save me some trouble! Was about to buy 4 backup EVO's because of the CD Odyssey end of life. Thanks, Steel. Much appreciated.

That's true, Grug. Good point. Being mainly an amateur, I still usually take the route of 'buy cheaper and deal with it later,' but there's something to be said for playing it safe, especially if I'm filming for worj and not for pleasure.

Glad I could help, Ed! It's too bad the PRO drives are about twice the price of the EVO versions!
