I am working on a G5 with FCP 4.5. I connect the computer to a Sony DVCam deck via firewire. The deck is hooked to a sony trinitron to monitor playback. (G5 > DVCam deck > Trinitron.) I was capturing some footage through the deck, everything was going fine untill i closed the Log and Capture window. When i was watching timeline playback on the trinitron, there was a wierd grey interference that looked like the digitizing that can occur on a smudged DVD. There were also odd audio spikes going on.
I tried some trouble shooting. First i just played a tape in the deck, like i did as i was capturing...... No problem. Next i unhooked the G5 and connected the deck to my laptop, also running FCP 4.5. (Powerbook > DVCam Deck > Trinitron) Playback on the trinitron was fine. This leads me to believe that the firewire cable and the deck are ok and the issue must lie in the G5. I am ruling out a bad firewire port due to the fact that capturing footage is working ok. The problem only occurs during playback from the timeline or viewer.
Another trouble shooting test i did was to unhook the firewire from the deck, and route the firewire through a separate Analog / Digital Converter then plugging this converter into the decks 2nd input via S video and RCA. ( G5 > Converter > Deck > Trinitron.) This also worked out fine!
Anyone have any idea what could be going on here? I shot a short clip of the monitor during playback...... This is what it looks like......
