Odd G3 glitch? Feature?

Hi

I did a seried of interviews yesterday with a couble system recording: G3 wireless lav, and Hyper on a boom. The interviews went fine until the last one. With fresh betteries, and no changes to the menu, my G3 audio seemed to be cutting out the sound when the source was quiet, save for a little rustling. They would speak and I would hear them fine, but when they stopped the unit went totally silent like a noise gate was engaged. If they moved ans causes a little rustling sound it would pop on quickly then go silent until they would talk. I couldn't find anything in the menu or the manual about this. When I tested the unit today, it was back to normal with the audio on constantly as it should be.

Does anyone have an idea of what this was?

what mic were you using on the G3? i've had my connector come loose on my b6 and cause a similar issue.

Sanken COS11D. It just didn't seem to be related to movement, as a bad connection would. After I got the mic off the talent I held it and spoke into it and it still had the problem. I shook the cables around. Yelled into the mic. Very odd. Now the issue is gone and I'm at a loss.

Possibly the person you were interviewing had a cellphone set on silent close to TX ....instead of not completely off.

My vote is squelch as well. It can be a fine line sometimes and is possible your noise level was right on the edge to begin with then dipped during your issues.

My squelch was set to low as always. Not sure about the phone, but the problem continued when I took the transmitter away and tested it on myself. The room was treated and very dead, which I consider a good thing normally. There was no noise in the room, or very low noise. Only the occasional slight movement noise of clothes that popped it out of dead silence, or a disengaged signal as if there was a noise gate engaging and disengaging.

Should one leave squelch set to off until a problem arises?

I did have a "P" displayed. I looked in the manual, and it said that "P" designates "pilot tone", but it didn't say what pilot tone is. The manual for the G3 is surprisingly sparse.

What is pilot tone?

Pilot tone is a little signal that the transmitter sends out to let the receiver know that the signal it's getting is from the transmitter, not from something else.
