Octava

we used our octava mic in the studio for the first time today. that little commie mic sounds great! it knocks the crap out of the senn me66 and the senn wireless we'd been using for interviews. I don't know **** about attenuation or db's or that kind of techie stuff (quazimoto handles all that...) but i do have a better than average ear. and the octava kicks some serious ass.

Glad to hear you're happy with it... I still think that little mic is the most significant factor in the audio for video revolution. I always have mixed feelings when I beat up on the '66 like I do... but I BOUGHT one and USED it for at least a year before putting an Oktava head-to-head with it... and I came to the same conclusions. That's the only reason I'm so vocal about the Oktava... When you consider that the current cost of the '66 is $480 and the MK012 is $165... then you LISTEN... it will turn you into an opinionated freak also.*

*yeah... yeah... I know the '66 is a different type of mic but until you hear the things that Brian's hearing you won't understand.

I've never liked the 66, not at all.

And, as any James Bond fan should know, martinis are to be shaken, not stirred.

I'm of the opinion that the '66 is an okay mic... just not a very good one. When did the '66 come out anyway? More then 10 years ago? When it came out it was an important advance for entry-level filmmakers... because it's modular, it's sensitive, and it can run on battery power. Since then there's just been a lot of better choices that have come along... but the '66 got so much momentum early on that it's been rolling along on a snowball of reputation. The people who don't do any research are the one's who get swept up into it.

I have always been in love with the ME66 as a concept so I have rented it, borrowed it, and bought it (only to return it).

The simple fact is, the ME66 does not sound like it should, and the quality is just plain bad when you compare it to other solutions. Honestly though, it is not fair to compare the ME66 to the Oktava, whereas it would be fair to compare the Me64 to the Oktava. The Oktava still spanks the hell out of it. The ME line does nothing for me.
