OConnor 1030D and long lenses

Hello.

I'm using a Red 300mm prime lens on my camera with a Sachtler DV10 Head and I'm finding the head a bit shaky. When I put the camera into crop mode (600mm equivalent) it's even worse. It's difficult to get shots without the head recoiling back a bit at the end of a pan. The legs are Sachtler CF HD so there's no issue there. Does anyone have any experience using the Oconnor 1030D with really long lenses? I've used Sachtler for over 20 years, but I'm thinking it might be time to mix things up a bit.

Thank you.

Some where on the web is an article about a videographer who shoots wildlife with really long lenses. I'm pretty sure that's what he uses. I know he uses an O'Connor, reasonably sure it's a 1030. He went through the same issues as you. The internal construction of those heads is the best you can buy. If you look on Novacam2000.com you can get an idea of how it's constructed. I use an old model 30 head that I changed the springs for the counterbalance to use with a much lighter camera. While I get stupid smooth pans and tilts, I get springback due to it's different type of construction. Looking at the construction of all the newer model of O'Connor's, I doubt that it would be an issue. They are just so darn expensive. For what I do, racing videography, my model 30 works great.
