Obtaining Permission

Okay, so for my film, we are using mostly local, unsigned bands whom we have acquired permission for their songs to be used in our film. However, there are a few songs from signed bands whom we would like to try to have in our film.

Who do I contact to obtain permission? Is it possible to get permission for free? What should I say?

I'm really unlearned with the whole situation so any help is appreciated.

The lable is who will grant you rproper permission. It's as easy as tellin' em what you are doin' and askin'. You can get proper contact info from the band's manager.

I'd say you're talking about a licensing issue not a permission issue. And, you only need rights if you're going to broadcast or screen your film in a public forum (or offer it to the public).

You have to contact the record label for master rights and also the publisher for the sync rights.
