My 1968 Nikkormat still works, and to my delight the 24 mm, 50 mm and 105mm Nikkor lenses that I bought for it around that time are going to work on the AF-100 that I plan to buy at the beginning of 2011, about 42 years later.
Now, does anyone here think that the AF-100 will still be working 42 years from now in 2053? 2043? 2023?
It's a funny world we live in. They say that 35mm film became standard in 1909, and that technology, perforated transparent film with a photo-chemical sensitive backing, is still working 100 years later.
Bets on h.264 encoded digital media working 100 years from now?
If a print of Howard Hawk's Big Sleep had been put in a cool dark dry mountain vault in 1946 when it (finally) came out and removed yesterday it could probably be projected on most any screen tonight. Will our grandchildren be able to project the digital or digitalized (through the DI process) films being made today?
Everything is ephemeral - ashes to ashes- Ozymandias - it's just a matter of when or how fast - but I sure get a kick out being able to watch the Gish girls wallking down that street in 1912 in the Musketeers of Pig Alley - and I wonder about our world where the future of what is being made is so limited - disposable art. Accelerated ashes to ashes. Or is that merely what we deserve?
