Decided to go see this. Thought it was just okay. Had some inspired moments and entertaining characters, but it doesn't add up to much. One of my biggest issues with the film is that they had a lead character who was supposedly bi-polar but they only paid lip service to the disorder, mainly using it as a plot point. I know people who suffer from this and they did not depict the manic highs and crushing lows. I know it's a comedy but it just gave the whole thing a superficial layer of cartoon unreality. I guess that's it. It's a film that is attempting to mine comedy out of some pretty dark stuff but only does so in a glancing manner. They don't go the full distance with the character. And the fact that Ronnie isn't institutionalized at the end for a good long while really strains credibility. Seth Rogen was good in what is easily his best performance. A lot of people hate that guy but I think it's mostly jealousy. Because he is an unremarkable looking guy of average talent, a lot of guys think "That a-hole is a movie star!? I'm funnier and better looking than him!", which may be true. But I think he makes what he does look easier than it is, too. I find him likable enough.
