NYU Film Program

NYU/Tisch

NYU/Tisch

Location, location, location. NYU has access to the bigshots in TV, film, movies, etc. Some knock film school, saying the money could be spent elsewhere, and sometimes they are right.

A degree from there opens doors too. if I had my choice to fund two projects, and one was an NYU film school grad, I *might* think that the person at least had some decent training.

however, if the person from the proejct that doesn't have the degree shows me a film they did, and its spectacular, then... why not? the proof is in the pudding.

I live in the Village in NYC and see the film kids out shooting all the time. Not only that, I'm sure their profs get them onto movie sets, TV sets, etc, and the networking must be good too.

When looking at a particular school you have to look at the entire picture. NYUs film program has a lot going for it. For one, it is very tough to get into. So, if you are accepted into this program, it is like saying to anyone who might one day peruse your resume', that you have what it takes. Whether you do or not, it doesn't matter.

Also, you have to look at the equipment. Do they have new equipment? Do they have new cameras, new computers, etc. How experienced are the professors? Do they have a stong mixture of tenure professors and real-world instructors? What is the teacher to student ratio? How long do you have to wait when you call their bursars office/registrations office/fin aid office before an actual human picks up the phone? You may laugh, but this is part of what you pay for. When I went to CSUN (my undergrad), it took FOREVER to deal with ANYTHING in that Godforsaken bureaucracy. I was on the phone dealing with the red tape my ENTIRE time there. Stressfull as holy hell. In fact, I still haven't forgiven them for that. However, I go to NYU for graduate school. I call anyone of their departments, I kid you not, I am talking to a human being within 2 minutes. EVERY time. It makes a HUGE difference.

Consider the location. NYU is in a great place of cultural diversity and is saturated with art.

So, it is no coincidence that NYU churns out some talent. But is it worth its hefty pricetag? That is for you to decide. Personally, as far as I'm concerned, 2 months away from graduating and once and for all, finally completing my school life, only time will tell...

Good luck.

Rick

You kno...speaking of that Tisch film school...I signed up for their High School Summer Program for this summer...hopefully they'll accept me.

I was reading their requirements...they demand sooooo much from people...but its definitly worth it...but thats for people that apply for their college..not a high school thing..but even for high school...they make u go thru the process like ur goin to college.

If you're looking to break into New York, meet some great folks with similar interests, make some connections and learn a bunch...then school is great. However, if having $90,000 in debt when you got out isn't your thing...then you can achieve all the same things by being a PA. But I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Although it never hurts to have a degree.

man, i'm going to TCU. the film school here isn't incredible, but we've got a great teaching staff. anyways, i'm paying 32,900 this year. not a fun price to pay. i think tuition has gone up a full 20% or so since i've been here. and they just raised it again for next year!

Well...its one of the top film schools..then i would most definitly think that you would go on sets and become aquainted with many industry working people.

But..even thou you might kno people..getting the education is also important...so u should still be concerned with that...i mean u can know tons of people..but still not know anyting...that wont get u far.

If you go to a good filmschool and slack off for three years you won't amount to much. You get out what you put in.

Well...there really isnt A TOP film school...they all pretty much tied in when it comes to having good cirriculums.

NYU
UCLA
USC

..just to name a few...but there are prolly more.

I should mention along with what Isaac said, that much of your success in this area will probably depend on your networking ability. The best part of attending a school with good faculty and industry connections would be your access to them. But, if you're not a networker and don't take advantage of that, you wasted a bit of money. I don't think they will go out of their way to "place" you. But they'll be there for the go getters to latch on to.

I mean, that's the whole point of attending such a prestigious school, it's to get into the industry!?

I loved that line in Adaptation where he tells his brother not to call it "the industry"!

Yes, I realize that in the end Charlie triumphed by melding his brothers views and skill in with his own...

May The Force be with you in whatever decisions you make!

Oh yeah, I remember that line from Adaptation... I better not slum to the cliches! :)
By the way, great movie!

Well, right now NYU is still under consideration... for $40,000 a year, it's not cheap at all.

same price as USC... I remember that from the tour i did over the summer. i honestly can't believe they denied Spielberg 3 times. They gave him an honorary degree though a few years back and now he's on the board of trustees or something like that. the only way he'd accept the honorary degree though was if the guy who denied his admission 3 times stamped the diploma 3 times lol

LOL! That's worse then the Mac vs. PC debate.

The old saw is that the beautiful people move to California, the Intelligent people move to New York. I came to New York though, so what do I know. But they are VERY different places - you need to check them both out. I don't know if I could live in Southern California, but folks from there would say the exact same thing about NYC.

Which do you prefer, Vancouver or Toronto?

Visit the schools before you reach your decision.

and some other schools too..dont limit yourself to just two....theres also a film school in the NY state university up in Syracuse...and one somewhere in Miami...but there are probably plenty more schools around the nation..but those are the ones that i know of.
