NYC filmmaking scene

So, I'm planning on moving to NYC in December :) I'm getting a cheapo place in Brooklyn and taking the T to [insert gig places here].

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to not die or become homeless? The only places I know of are craigslist and mandy for getting gigs.

I'm an editor and cam op with my own equipment. Definitely looking into some insurance for at least the camera and the macbook.
 
move to Jersey..... they need people....... ;)

Seriousyl, get 4 roomates, eat ramen, and become REAL friendly with the garbage man... youd be amazed what they can get you that still works.....

Yeah, I'm moving in with 3 other people I know to a 2 bedroom place.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. I plan on directing some day, so I hope that starting off as editor/videographer is the right thing to do.
 
This is kind of an out of the box idea, but you may consider that more and more companies are looking for video content for their website.

If you have the skill set and equipment to produce complete short videos, you should be able to stay very busy offering affordable short videos to businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Whether it be a short commercial for a restaurant, bar, bookstore, etc, or training video for some small corporation, it would seem that the opportunity is there and unlimited. This may not be the kind of video you want to make, but you could always use these projects to hone your skills.

I'd get a website of your own up as soon as possible, too.

You just have to keep chuggin' through all the ads and putting your name out there. Its hard to find good paying gigs and you have a ton of competition in NYC so you just have to pound away all day long on every ad place you can find on the days you have nothing to do. Ain't no such thing as chillin trying to hustle yourself but it beats sitting behind a desk all day long. Having a girlfriend or boyfriend to help pay rent and stuff helps a heap too.
