NY Places to Live

Hey there guys I am planning a move to NY in the next year or two from Australia to follow my film dream. Just wanting to know the best regions of NYC to live that are safe and aren't gonna break the bank.

How Much am I looking at paying a week or month?

I would only need a one bedroom place so I'm not too bothered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try astoria neighborhood in queens. A 1 br will run about 1200$ a month. Safe, good food, close to manhattan, and inexpensive relative to manhattan.

That's a good option. I lived in brooklyn for years, prospect heights. Paid 1500 per month for two Bedroom and had a roommate. Get someone to split the rent and you may make out better.

Manhattan is CRAZY expensive. If money is an issue I would not look there. Well, any trendy parts of manhattan anyway.

NY is great city. I wish I never left.

There are a lot of neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn that are safe and affordable - it just depends on how long you want to ride on the subway to get to Manhattan. The further you go, the cheaper the rent gets. Astoria and Woodside in Queens are both good options, so is Jackson Heights if you want to go a little further. Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene, and Prospect Heights in Brooklyn are all pretty affordable and relatively safe.

I'm pretty happy in Hoboken, just across the Hudson river from Manhattan. My commute to Manhattan is shorter than some neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn. You have a lot of options.

What do the rental sites label the rent as? Weekly or monthly i've been looking at a few but I think some of them would have to be a week due to the quality of the apartments???

Yeh I was thinking of going to NY from New Zealand, although Im from England. Shi* sounds more expensive than living in London.

i think london is more expensive....

You can do a few things to get by cheaper in NYC. DONOT shop at wholefoods. Shop at Fairway instead, same quality, alot cheaper.

Walk/bike instead of taking the subway, the fare is 2.25 now. if you run three errands, its like almost 13$ for trandsportation.

NEVER take a cab.

Take advantage of all the free entertainment the city sponsors. Shaekspere in the park, Herald square film nights, and missummer night swing in Lincoln center....

I don't live in the city, but living on Long Island at the moment, it's easy to get a grasp of how you can prepare to live there. Rent is a killer, but with a few adjustments to your other expenses, you should be able to compensate:

- Cars are unnecessary, so payments on the car, and the insurance are already out (Metro Cards replace this fee, however, though some staff jobs are willing to pay for them).
- Tons of free entertainment as Timur has said, even just walking around you'll find SOMETHING going on.
- Internet is about the only (optional) thing you may have to pay for - unless your apartment has it (is this a norm for NYC?). In any case, only watch television online for free (yes, it's legally possible to watch almost anything), your phone can be a single cell phone or a VOIP line (skype) for a minimal cost, with the only expensive part being skype hardware (one time cost!).
