NTSC to PAL using a NTSC HDV

Hello gang, first thread on dvxuser.

I have a simple question (I hope) for you guys. I have a customer that would like to have his content available in both NTSC and PAL format but obviously not on the same media. I would like to only edit the content once and then have the option to output the video to NTSC and PAL over to Encore to author the DVD menu.

My questions are as follow:
  1. Can I shoot in HD to then have a final product in PAL using an NTSC XH A1?
  2. Will I need to capture in NTSC and recapture everything in PAL and afterwards export to Encore without any issues?

If there is no way to achieve this simply, what steps should I take in order to fulfill this customer’s request?

Hope someone out there will be able to answer these questions.

Here is what I do when I have the need to produce a NTSC DVD for the US ( I am a PAL lander) I edit once only.

I shoot and edit in a PAL Timeline Project. I EXPORT> Movie (PAL) from the project.

I create a NEW NTSC Project and import the movie.

I EXPORT > DVD from the NTSC project and choose settings of choice.

Simple /effective / fast. (You would work vice versa)

Unfortunatly i got to your message too late. But here is what i did and maybe you can tell me if this has a chance of working.

I captured, edited my footage in NTSC

I then exported to DVD Encore in PAL

Once in Encore i created my menu and burned my project in PAL.

The DVD is sent already so there's no way for me to redo it your way. :S

In your opinion, do you think it can work?

P.S. Why do you export to Movie to then re-import in PP? Wouldn't simply export directly to PAL give you the same result? PP does the same conversion regardless if its in one long movie or edited footage.
 
Where I live - New Zealand - 99% of DVD players will play PAL and NTSC DVDs.

When I send DVDs to the U.S , it is fact that 99% of the players can only play NTSC DVDs

I have found that Encore is not happy importing a PAL avi into an NTSC project so I have to "remake" it in an NTSC project first.

If I do not need menus etc... I can EXPORT>DVD in ENCORE and use an NTSC setting. Strangely that works fine. (That workflow does not open Encore but produces a DVD of the timeline)
 
I heard back from the client in Europe using an PAL DVD player and he has confirmed that the footage worked fine, so i guess switching from NTSC to PAL is a lot easier than i anticipated.
