NTG3 TASCAM DR 40 - Sample Files & Question

Hi,

I Just got an NTG3 used. Since it was so expensive I was hoping if any experts out there can let me know if it sounds right. Also, I figured I could share some samples so others could have a listen. I think they sound as they should. I freaked out at one point when I had to raise the gain on the mixer and then realized I switched off of the dynamic mic setting.

The one random thing about the tascam and even the mixer - when I flipped on the phantom there was a weird squirrely sound (like it was firing up I guess) I hope that is normal. I would appreciate any feedback to let me know if the NTG3 sounds ok. If not, I need to return it. Thanks!

Sounds fine, tho you should be outdoors in a quiet area. Don't push the NTG-3 into its aluminium tube head first, then pull it out with a popping sound.

And register on line at Rode, for your free 10yr warranty.

Cheers.

I got it used so not sure about the warranty. So push it is backwards? Then pull it out head first? Thanks had no idea. I noticed that there are two caps. On cap is slightly wider than the other. I plan to just keep it in the rode blimp and it is sitting inside a pelican 1600 case.

I hear rode is well built so counting on that to carry me :)

Yep the NTG-3 is very well designed and built and so is the sound :) Some say it's a copy of another shotgun mic, but it's not,
it's a Rode original and the guys out at the plant here are very proud of it.

And that's how I store my NTG-3s, head out. All the caps on the aluminium tubes are the same size and can be interchanged.
Use the Rode name on the tube as the guide for the head of the mic.

Don't forget to use your Blimps comb and brush the Wombats hairs out straight, so they do their job in the wind.
After some time, and especially if you work around dust, you can wash the Wombat with a dish of luke warm water and a smidge of mild soap.

Don't completely soak it, and pat it dry with a clean towel then let it dry out in sunlight for a few hours.

Are you the 2nd owner of your NTG-3?

Cheers.

Thanks for all the info! I think I might be the 3rd owner. I got it off of ebay for 399. The ebay seller had an outstanding rep. A bit of a gamble I know.

Good deal and you can download its manual from the Rode website.

One thing they stress, connect the NTG-3 up before you power it up, then power down before you disconnect. Try not to buy elcheapo mic cables off ebay,
buy a reputable brand like Canare .. they'll last longer for one thing.

Cheers.

OMG YOU ARE THE BEST!

It was easy to register. Found out it was bought July 2010. So I am good for a while. SO MANY THANKS!

Edit: Allan, me being totally oblivious, do you work with Rode? I really appreciate your help!!!

Anyone who buys a pre-loved Rode mic can use this link and transfer the registered free 10yr warranty to them .. as the new owner.

Thanks.
O/T but a good time to relate the story of how RODE got its name .. many people think it's Greek but it's not.
I knew Henry Freedman, CEO Peter Freedmans dad.

In the early days their shop was in a Sydney surburb and they repaired electronics, guitar amps etc. One day someone bought in a mic that was broken.
While repairing it Henry figured he could improve the sound, so he did. The very happy owner passed the news around the biz. and more mics turned up to be improved.

Henry and Pete then built their own design mic and sent it around the pro studios here for comment.
One engineer rang back saying, 'Whoa! that mic will sell like a rat up a drainpipe!'

So looking for a new company name they thought 'Hey Rodent! RODE! sounds good to us. From there they named their new mics NT .. getting back to RODENT!

And the rest is an Aussie success story. Their huge plant out at Silverwater here is really something to see, phone them and call in when you're in Sydney.
I'm under an NDA, keeps the rain off too :)

Cheers.
