NTG1 Accessorie Question

I have the SM-3 shockmount and it is very good. Great isolation plus it can fit on camera using the built in hot shoe mount or on the end of a boom pole, any boom pole. No need to spend more in my opinion.

I use the the K-Tek softie for my NTG-1 and they use the "short" K-Tek softie. I just like K-Tek products and company and they tend to be a little less than Rycote in price when it comes to softies and zepplins.

I agree, the rode shockmount is good for shotguns and also flexible (cam or boom mount). You can't beat it for $50.

WHen I rant about the K-Tek KSSM it is only for the Oktava as it is so short and hard to get enought "bite" on it with the BBG (the oktava is also sensitive as heck).

Gitzo makes great poles. Get the 7560c 12'5" carbon fiber pole if you can ($250). The other, shorter, cheaper gitzos are good too, but you would be suprized how much the extra reach helps out (thanks MattinSTL for that tip).

Correct the NTG-1 and NTG-2 are the same mic, except that the NTG-2 can be powered by an internal Battery in situations where you don't have 48v Phantom Power

also, i notice they call the rode a condenser shotgun microphone...does that mean it's not as good for use outdoors?
In this case, the term "condenser" refers to the mechanical design of the microphone. Condenser (aka "Capacitor") microphones use a thin diaphragm stretched close to a charged metal back-plate to create a capacitor in which the capacitance varries with incoming vibrations. Unlike "dynamic" mics, condenser mics require an opperational voltage to charge the back-plate. This voltage can be supplied via the microphone cable (as is the case in 48V phantom power and T-12 or A/B powering), via a sepperate power supply (such as the 130V power supply used for the DPA 4003), or via an internal battery (an option often found in inexpensive back-electret condenser mics).

Condenser mics differ from dynamic mics in other ways, as well. Perhaps most importantly, condenser tend to be much more sensitive. Dynamics, on the other hand, typically have much higher maximum SPL ratings.

So... no, the "condenser" description does not neccessarily mean that the NTG1 is poorly suited to outdoor use.

Performance of the mic when using batteries is not as good as when using phantom power... so I see the battery-powering as "of limited usage". For me, the smaller size of the NTG-1 therefore trumps the dual-powring of the -2. Of course, I don't have any recording devices that DON'T provide phantom power... even the 30v from the microtrack seesm to work fine wiuth the NTG-1.

This is quite true, although if you're recording in an area with lots of RF noise (eg. near a radio transmission tower), cables carrying phantom power can pick up some rather nasty noise. In such situations, it can be handy to have the option of an internal battery.

thats not true for every mic , dont sure that the ntg-2 wouldnt work as antenna as well . its not as it becomes 2 wire configuration :)
i picked ones something similar inn all my 20 years of working so dont really even consider this argument for real life .
sorry exept some one who realy think he is going use the ntg for unpowered devices ( 0.5% of the dv semy pro market) i dont see any benefit buy longer , hevier ,more expencive peace of ****

But if you can phantom power the NTG2 and use the batterie if needed, the only advantge left to the NTG1 is size?

weight and price
for aditional 50 $ you can eat at least 1 good stake , that win it all :)
my dear i really didnt use bateries for the last 10 yars in any microphones exept the shure 88 which works the same with or without phantom power .

Can someone provide a link to a good Ktek or rycote softie that i can use with the ntg1?

Preferably from B&H, but I'll take anything.

Thanks.

Believe the sound room is now repping rycote. MUCH better place to spend your $$ and support a DVX sponsor! http://www.sound-room.com

Also believe they offer a dvxuser discount. And yes, rycote prices are outrageous but bottom line is they work.

Best to call them @ 888-529-0128 or email sales@sound-room.com

I shop there too, but I just don't know which exact model of windjammer(softie) to get for my ntg1. I couldn't find anything specific on their website, and B&H has too many options of varying sizes.

As I look under the search terms "rycote softie", I'm seeing a 29cm, 12cm 24cm, 5cm, 18cm, 32cm, etc.

Which rycote softie do you guys use for your NTG1. Please provide a link if ya got one.

Thanks
