I am wondering what extra cables I need to go with this setup. I have a 1.5' XLR cable for the NTG-1 (I've searched everywhere and is this really the shortest they go?) and am wondering what other cable I need for this setup; is it the 3.5 from the DXA to the 7D mic in line?

Thanks!

Yes, 3.5mm from the Beach to the camera. But why is 1.5 foot too long for the XLR going from the mic to the Beach???? Surely you don't want shorter because you're planning on using the mic at the camera position are you? Even a shotgun mic needs to be much closer to the subject than that 99.99% of time. A short 'gun like the NTG-1 has an optimum working distance around 20 inches from the subject, consequently that means it's mounted on a boom, and for most shots that will translate to a required cable on the order of 25 feet or so.

I'm travelling soon and am using the NTG-1 as a basic run n gun mic since I don't want to carry a boom + I am travelling alone. Was debating getting a VideoMic Pro but post-travelling the NTG-1 will be a LOT better mic than the VideoMic Pro for any use. Basically just wanted to capture good ambient sound in certain areas, and also using it as a mic for skiing edits on a glidecam and a windcat..
