November - WOW!

Hello my fellow DVXuser peeps. Just a heads up on the movie "November" which I saw last night. This movie was shot on the DVX100A with no modification or adapters. As you all may know by now, DP Nancy Schrieber, ASC won best cinematography at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival for November.

If you are in New York City, its showing at the Sunshine theatre on Houston between 1st and 2nd Ave. Its also showing at the AMC theatre on 42nd Street and at the Clearview on 62nd and 1st ave. Tonight might be the last night at the Sunshine theatre because of their quick rotation regarding indie films.

The images are very good considering it came from a sub $4,000 camera and no anamorphic lens was used. It is the best I've seen when compared to the Sony PD150 or the Canon XL series. She made good usage of color, light, shadow, techniques and even the wide shots were remarkable good; a testament to her expertise and to the colorist Mike Sowa. As the HVX200 HD camera is about 3-4 months away, its good to know that you can still compete with the big boys with just the DVX100. Peace to all. One!

This Sony Classics/Indigent film was written by Benjamin Brand and directed/edited by Greg Harrison on an Avid System. Post production was done at Lucas' Skywalker facility.

November WAS shot with a modification...it has zero compression(4:4:4 transfer as opposed to "no mod" 4:1:1 that most of us shoot with...alot like http://reel-stream.com/andromeda ). There is a definite difference in final quality. This is straight from the director's mouth at the SIFF 2005(seattle Int. Film Fest).

As far as I know, the colour correction was done in 4:4:4 - but the actual footage was recorded to MiniDV tape, which inherrently is 4:1:1

I don't think the reel-streem guys had a completely functional system when the film was shot anyway.

I saw it last week. The red room scene was so nasty on a big screen, it was obviously shot in 4:1:1. When there was no red and no burned out highlights everything looked very good.

The film was shot directly to mini DV - it was offlined at DV25 but recaptured at uncompressed SD via SDI for final conform and color correction. Greg also did all of his effects in After Effects and did not want to deal with the decompress/recompress of working in DV25 furing the FX creation.

Once the uncompressed master left the Avids system, it may have gone through farther color correction in HD, but I don't know for sure. I can find out.

I just saw it here in chicago yesterday and the first thing that I noticed was that the film was really, really dark (in terms of image onscreen I thought it borderd on underexposure), it was so dark that sometimes I couldn't really see what was onscreen at times.
Towards the end of the film it did seem to lighten up (albieit a small amount). I remember the DP talking about how certain scenes of the film had specific colors as to add to the tone of the scene.
I don't know if the guy in the booth operating the projector sucked or what..... but I thought that the film was too dark.

ok, saw november tonite. and i thought the footage off the 100a looked very nice.
im good at figuring plotlines out, but this one... would love input of those who saw it. what happened????i was totally lost by the end of the movie
if you dont want to give it out here, email me

And I don't believe it was even a DVX100A - I think it was the good old DVX100!

I finally got to see the movie today, there were 3 color scenes in this movie. The best one was the second color scene. As for the movie, I thought it was okay. But it was a big disappointing, and at times confusing. Love the photography even though it was shot on DVX100 not DVX100A.

Shot on aDVX100
Edited on an AVID Adrenaline
Outputted to Digibeta
Up-resed to 1080P
Color corrected on a30' screen with a Pogel CC
Audio sweetened at Skywalker

And I should add one more point to this discussion. While November came out quite nice what you don't read in the Panasonic sponsored articles is the fact that Nancy Schreiber has made it clear to lots of folks that she never again wants to shoot another project on a DV camera, whether it's a DVX100 or anything else. But that doesn't part seem to get printed these days.

hmmm.... for some reason i recall reading that she said she would ONLY do it if it was the right director, right film, etc.

Maybe I'm getting articles mixed up.

I'm not talking about articles but about what she has said to folks who don't write the articles and edit them to sound the way they want, she will never shoot with DV again. Just heard this again from someone in post production she spoke to last week about it.
