Notice anything strange in this clip?

Around 5:35 in the clip... do you notice something strange for the entire scene? I did. Trying to figure out if it is supposed to be an 'artistic' thing we are supposed to notice, or if it just didn't turn out 'right'.

Stephen Goldblatt ASC, BSC, is fantastic so I'm just hanging on that it's supposed to be noticed by the careful observer and is, in fact, artistic visual subtext... or he just poopooed it all to hell.

I assume u mean the camouflage net that is held up in front of the sun? haha
Im not a fan...

Yeah. It doesn't move right. They are moving and sometimes the foliage cookie doesn't move as much as it should. Stuck out to my DP eye like a teenager in a liquor store.

I just felt that it was a bit intense for the setting and blocked too much light... also the fact that the people behind them were unaffected by this intense tree shadow haha it just stood our like a soar thumb for me...
But as you said Ryan... it may have been an artistic visual subtext... :-/

If you go to about 6:05-30 you will see people who have followed the main characters path, but they are in 'bright sunlight', where as the main characters were in the patterned shadow during all of their walk down the sidewalk.

There were trees/arbor shadows that were 'real', because one can see the arbor and branches as the shot progresses. So, what may have happened is that whatever the main characters were 'shadowed' with, would at times be 'augmented' by the real shadows from the real trees and arbor.

Probably an attempt to be consistent with the lighting on the main characters, and for the 'average' viewer, not noticeable 'side effects'.

Not a fan at all. I would like it if they found a way to make it realistic. Since that pattern isnt behind them its very distracting.

This made me laugh, because ASC/BSC or not, I think it's pretty terrible. The foilage shadow doesn't move across their bodies and faces, it just moves side to side even as we dolly back. And that's the obvious part. There's a moment where the foilage shadow begins to move normally, well, as normal as we'd expect it to given that the light source is the sun and the angle at which the sun rays are hitting them - but it goes back to moving strangely and we don't even see a tree that would cast that shadow camera left, where it should be to cast that type of shadow. It's...so awkward.
