Can someone PLEASE help me?!?!?!?!
I went kayaking with a friend of mine the other day and while exploring an interesting little section of the shoreline, I got into some poison ivy/ sumac/ oak.
Does anyone know of something to ease the itch? I've tried just about everything over the counter and none of it worked. I'm about to claw my leg off.
I had a bout like this a few years ago when I worked for a doctor and he gave me a shot of steroids. I'd like to avoid this route if possible. I just need some relief.

Try Kalimine lotion. I'm sorry I don't know how to spell it. But they use it when kids get chicken pocks. Sorry you had a bad trip I love Kayaking it is just to bad I only get to do it a couple of times a year.

Ok, here's what I do:

1) Get in shower.

2) Make water hot as hell.

3) Stick itchy area under incredibly hot water.

This will numb your nerves and knock down the itch. Enjoy!:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Grin and bear it, in the long run it will make you funnier.

In the meantime, hit friend over head with paddle.

Don't scratch it too much, fer sure not to break the skin. I got some into an open cut and my arm swelled up. I looked like Popeye.

Calomine lotion, Benedryl, Cortaid.

Thanks gang,
I should know better by now than to go near anything resembling nature. etween the poison ivy, the chiggers, and the mosquitos, I am becoming more and more the inside kinda guy. The kayaking was great. It was the first time my friend had ever been. I have a couple of boats and go all the time.

Calamine lotion; who invented this stuff?! Completely ineffective, it is somewhat soothing until it dries, then you’ve got crusty pink crap all over you, not really a problem except your still itchy. I think its only use was as prop to facilitate lying to children. ‘Don’t worry; this will make it all better.’

Benadryl; Fantastic stuff, take the pills, its more effective then the lotion, heck use ‘em both. Your mileage may vary I’ve never had much of a reaction to posion ivy so I don't know whowell it works on that, my brother on the hand, giant blisters 3 to 5 inches across. Don’t know what my folks used on him, but whatever it was, it didn’t work. Don’t know if they had steroid shots back then, the thought of taking one of use to the doctor for something so minor as a poison ivy would never have crossed their minds. Probably gave him Calamine. ‘Here, this will make it all better’, it doesn’t and it won’t. Just remember, when you lie to your kids, they will remember, and one day they will be ranting about you on the internet, just like this.

I had poison ivy BAD last year - I had to take time off work cuz I couldn't move without itching. I did try the hot hot hot shower trick...it works, but as soon as you get in the water it made me itch like there was no tomorrow.

The BEST thing I did was rub ice on the super itchy spots. If you feel your skin where you have it, it'll be really hot - that's your body inflaming to get rid of the poison, hence itching. Rub an ice cube on it, and the itching will go away for a few hours.

There's a product called IvyDry that will help get rid of it faster...gotta get it at a drugstore. If it's really really bad, go to the doc and they'll give you a steroid shot - it'll be all washed up after a couple days.

I personally would run to the dr for a shot in this case. But when I was little, I remember my mom putting white shoe polish on my brother when he got into it bad. Just to make sure I wasnt crazy, I looked for info on it. I would still be leery of this though, as ingredients change over the years. I dont think anyone would really try this nowdays anyway, but it was interesting the home remedies mentioned here:

Hmmmm.... what an interesting find this thread is. Coincidentally, I've been suffering through the last two weeks with Poison Ivy (or one of it's evil cousins) on my arse. That's right... on my arse.

How did it get there? Why didn't it get on an exposed part of my skin instead? I don't know, but... DAMN!... it itches! I've been using Caladryl with moderate success. Years ago, I had it all over both arms. I went to the doctor and got a Medrol dosepak (topical steroid pills) that kicked it's ass. Might be time to go get some more...

Yep, it will itch more than before for a couple minutes. But let the water keep hitting it, and the itch disappears completely because the nerves get overloaded.

DO NOT DO THIS!

Hot water opens your poors and makes the
situation worse. Stay away from hot water.
I've heard of people eating it as a preventative, now doesn't that sound fun?

Don't hate me, but poison ivy has never affected me. I don't know if it's because I grew up in a rural area(it's seriously everywhere that isn't mowed), or that I'm constantly exposed to it(I love the woods), but I've never had any problems with it. My dad's the same way, although my uncle was hunting and wiped his arse with it on accident and had to go to the Dr. for a shot.
I am still very respectful of the plant, though, and avoid it when I can.
Ticks, chiggars, and skeeters are a whole other mess.

I've been told by a doctor that some people are so allergic to poison ivy that they can contract its poisons through airborne pollen from the plant (i.e. never had to actually touch the plant to get it).

How about this one? They cleared out a section of field and forest at the end of my street and burned all the detritus.

Which included poison ivy.

I had, pretty much, a full body attack from the wafting smoke.
