Nothing New from Panasonic at NAB 2018?

I was hoping that Panasonic would be introducing new cameras at the NAB show this year. It seems they have been reduced to a camera here and there every year or two. Makes me wonder about the market or their financial position.

My hope/expectation was to see a pro level 1" chip camcorder. To me, it is the perfect middle point for a modern video camera. I was surprised to see Sony introduce 1/2" and 1/3" 4k cameras and three chip no doubt. Confusing as I thought pixel density was the enemy of 4k resolution and I thought the single sensor approach was the path forward as well. Do these new Sony cameras use the dual ISO approach to get beyond the light sensitivity barriers?

Anyway, I know this area of the market has diminished since the larger chip revolution but I use my PX270 all the time. Very useful tool. I do not need 4k all that much but would like the better light sensitivity/noise and the little larger chip for aesthetics. Hopefully we can discuss.

To me the EVA1 firmware should have been there on camera launch; but I’m also not bothered as Panasonic has released 3 of the best cameras they’ve ever released in the last 12 months (GH5, GH5s, EVA1) so personally I’m happy and wasn’t expecting any further announcements this NAB.

I agree Panasonic has hardly been in the game since the Af100 but it does seem clear that is changing.

From my perspective, I was thinking more along the lines of Panasonic broadcast. The GH series was not part of this group traditionally. Also, I am kind of not counting cinema type cameras.

What!? You want to see a broadcast camera at a broadcast event??? What is wrong with you? ;)

Even if this would have pushed back the launch date by 6+ months ?

No! Definitely not. I just mean, I am also in the camp of "not a fan of cameras being released with partial features and promises down the road."

Logistically and practically, it is what it is, so I'll take it... I just wouldn't count it Panasonic's big NAB reveal since they disclosed this as a late feature launch last summer.

They could have done what companies usually do and not said anything about the firmware update and suddenly surprised everybody. This is all really about perspective. It is only frustrating to you because you knew it was coming. The EVA1 without the firmware update is still an exceptionally capable camera and in fact many are realizing the 150mbps format is visually just as good as the 400mbps so quality wise not much has changed.

Raw is cool but not everybody needs raw or wants to deal with external raw so releasing the camera early was great for those people.

I would also note that there are features in the EVA 2.0 firmware that were not disclosed back last summer. In fact some of them didn’t occur to our engineers until clients started seeing the camera.
