a while ago i finally sat down and watched "Adaptation"  which is a real love it  or hate it film.  i personnally really enjoyed it ..albiet i dont really care for nicholas cage. anyhow i was really intrigued by an idea presented in the film where a screen writer just wanted to present life as it is where nothing really ever happens.. instead of some over glamorized hollywood mockup. so ive been working on this scrpit for a film where the characters have this big aspiration to accomplish somthing, and the film is about them trying to reach this goal, but it never really goes anywhere, and instead the film really shows us a glimpse inside the reality of these peoples lives, and leaves us  with the impression that being unsuccsessful and having nothing happen can be a destiny in and of itself. .now of course the film could be anything from this generic concept of course, but im not going to post the script on the internet at this point so .... any thoughts on the general concept - is it interesting..stupid...dull.. so amazingly bad that you want to throw a rabid cat with glass shards glued on it at my eye..  id just like to hear anyones thoughts on it.

I would love to hear about it. What are they trying to accomplish? OR is it each individuals personal goals?

I too loved Adaptation. I like Nick Cage myself (Don't love him like CROWE or CLOONEY)

IS your story a comedy (not funny HAHA but black comedy as in comedy - tradegy) or is it the melodrama like MONSTER?

they are trying to accomplish a common goal, but each individual (2main chars) has their own reasons for trying to get it done.. one with much more reason than the other. --definitely melodrama reminds me of films like "White Oleander" -- "the Shawshank Redemption" or well.... "Adaptation"
but of course it is its own unique entity... not a shank off the listed films. it however does manage to become lighthearted at a few points.. just as life goes up and down. one character really has some serious personal issues, which really adds to the "bipolar" ability of the film.

however we have been giving some thought to doing a comedy as well. ..who knows. time pending.

I’ve toyed with the idea of following around a guy who’s always NEAR things that happen, but is never the guy it happens to. So, he’s, say, in the one of the buildings when the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man walks by the window behind him, etc. . . .

..interesting..is it a comedy(stay puft..lol)-drama- thriller- action?
does the protagonist acutally interact at all in some manner with te events/happenings?

nah .. its really quite serious. no real comedy accept a small amount of lackluster wit that the characters find somhow in some depressing situations.

i really have been thinking about doing a comedy though.. i just dont want to become a "comedy film writer" id really rather do drama. but as i said well see. maybe i can do both!

john.. i think you hit that on the mark.. he would be great in a film like that. (nevermind the recent "along came polly"..whatever that was supposed to be)

YEah, I was trippin on the POLLY film as well. Sides' I don't like scarves on chicks. :)

Ben Stiller is one funny nutha though.

there would be hype about a former circus clown turned heavy drinking bum, if he was on a syndicated show. people just praise people that they think have a better life than them... heres food for thought:
you will be treated better if :

1.you are rich
2.you are famous
3.you are powerful
4.you are good looking
5.you are close in with someone who is any of the above.
6.you look like you could be one of the above
7.you are close in with someone who looks to be one of^
8.you aspire to be one of the above
9.you know how to read
10.you do not smell like a monkeys butt, and eat maggots raw.

anyhow you get the point

I saw mine as a comedy, but I can't call the guy a "protagonist." He's more like a bystander.

short or feature length? id think it would be a bear to make it a feature without any real main strong characters, but could be done with a little tap taparoo of the good writing fairy. really is a new and interesting concept. really if it keeps coming into your head, you might as well give it a shot!

Does this BYSTANDER realize he is 'missing' the event taking place? OR is he/she completely oblivious?

Well, obviously, movies focus on only a few people, and they're the main drivers of the action. The big things happening are happening to THEM. But there are lots of supernumerary characters and others you don't see. When Buffy is fighting demons through the halls of Sunnydale High, isn't there *someone* nearby who hears it, or sees a flash? To use the Marshmallow Man example again, there had to be someone in the buildings he was walking past. This guy is someone who's around when all these big things happen, but they're not happening to him. He's just there.

Like I said, just something I've been kicking around. I don't have it terribly fleshed out yet.
