For editing and grading work (real time, as much as possible)

laptop with:

Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz
with 7200RPM
or Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz
with 5400RPM hard disk?

Same or similar price.

I cannot trade the internal disk without losing the manufacturer warranty.
I'll be using only the internal disk for programs, using USB 3.0 external drives for footage.

Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz
Max Turbo Frequency 2.9 GHz
benchmark 6338

Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz
Max Turbo Frequency 3.1 GHz
benchmark 6730

Is this 6.2% of difference any significant?

Are you storing your media files on the internal hard drive? If you're not the impact of that drive is pretty minimal.

Slower hard drives mean slower boot times for your programs, but once they get loaded into RAM the program files don't need to be accessed very often. I would go for the processor. Looking into the future, upgrading a hard drive is a lot cheaper than upgrading a processor.

As always, RAM is usually a bigger culprit in slow performance than anything else. If it fills up you'll find a lot more activity on the hard drive as data is written and read to a cache file, but hopefully you have enough RAM. There will not be a significant difference with either laptop most likely, nothing you would notice outside of numbers on test results. There isn't really a clear winner here, but I would still recommend going with the 2.20.

Your help would be much appreciated if you can also post your thoughts there, thank you.
