Looking for a laptop/notebook that :
1. have more than 1 HD or SSD
2. Has Intel i7
3. Has 1394 IEEE
4. Express card slot
5. Good Graphics
6. HDMI output
I popped in today with the same question but for Adobe software (PC). I have been researching for weeks now and can't seem to find the right one. I have come pretty close with some of the ASUS laptops on B&H. I found an ASUS G72Gx-A1 there for $1499.95 but it has a Core 2 Quad Q9000 instead of the i7. They also have an ASUS G51JX-A1 with an i7 720QM for slightly less ($1397.95) but drops down from 2x500Gb HDs to 1x 500GB HD but I figure another can be added after the fact (it has 2 bays). The display is smaller on the one with the i7 (15.6" compared to the other at 17.3).
I don't know if the Q9000 is going to show a significant performance loss compared to the i7 or not. If you go here you can see what else they have.
Thanks for the reply- we bought an ASUS G1VX last November. ( A Best Buy model) We stripped all of the trial-ware and Norton off. I really like the dual boot setup. The only complaints we had is we had to use an external hard drive and it is a little slow. That gets bulky with all of the other gear we have to travel with, let alone being a hassle when we set up and tear down in our hotel room.
I am going to check that ASUS out. Another one we are going to research is a Toshiba A505, by a recommendation from a friend. We haven't purchased yet, so if you come up with one keep in touch. We are still open to any suggestions.
The A505 looks like it only has room for 1 HD. B&H has an X505 that comes with a 64GB SSD and a 500GB HD but almost hits the $2K mark. I am not sure how the Solid State drive will perform but I imagine it is just for the OS. And it is back ordered so it isn't readily available from there. I had also been checking Tiger Direct but B&H has a better selection for the specs required.
Finalized my purchase today of a Sager NP8760 from xoticpc.com. A little higher in price than I wanted to spend but it has everything I needed. I should have it in a week or so. I will let you know how it does.
i can't recommend a specific product, as i am currently looking for a new laptop myself, but i can make a few recommendations:
first, don't let a laptop be your primary editing machine unless you truly have no other options.
2. "good graphics" shouldn't be a super-high priority because if you use vegas, it doesn't really depend on the graphics processor for rendering, just for previewing... and you shouldn't expect even a great laptop monitor to be the most accurate representation of your footage, unless your final product will be displayed on the web.
3. laptops with multiple hds are hard to come by and expensive.
4. don't get yourself stuck on a particular processor. this is as much advice to myself as to you, as i tend to eschew intel and only buy/build machines with amd procs.
depending on your total budget and what you're trying to produce, you might be better off with a nice stable desktop and a cheap simple laptop to get you by in the field until you get back to the real machine.
i don't mean to try to talk you out of what you've already decided, as i'm sure you've done your homework as i've done mine. i just know that a few years ago as my desktop was aging i decided to make a high end laptop my primary editor and regretted it for more than two years until i broke down and got a new desktop.
