Up until now I've been using Adobe Premiere on a Windows machine for my editing, and have multiple 7200 rpm drives in my main desktop machine for media storage and scratch disks. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I don't have much experience with mobile editing or the types of hard drives that would work well with it.
I've recently purchased a macbook pro with Final Cut Studio because that is all we work with in college courses and I'd love to be able to work on projects outside of the lab and also use it on personal projects to become a better editor with that program. I'd love to have a mac pro, but my current financial situation and living arrangement (tiny dorm) won't allow for it, so I got a macbook pro.
Currently my mbp is running a stock 250gb 5400rpm drive. It's already practically full due to my vast itunes library and photos, and I haven't even begun to put any other media (movies, tv shows) or HD video on this thing. Of course, I don't expect to be able to store ALL my HD video on here, but I'd like to at least be able to fit a couple projects on here at a time, and then just archive them to my USB external drive when I finish.
I'm basically looking for an internal drive that will allow me to edit comfortably without beach balling all the time (due to a slow performing drive), but also a drive that has a lot of space.
I know ideally I would get both an upgraded internal AND an OWC external FW drive for my editing projects and HD video, but I simply just don't have the funds for that at the moment. My budget is pretty much $150.
So, out of these options, which in your opinion would be the best purchase?
1. Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200rpm - $75
Not really a big drive, but definitely fast. Great benchmarks. Wouldn't be able to put much video on here, but I'd put the money left over towards an external FW for editing.
2. Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB 5200rpm - $140
Slower than my current drive, but INSANELY large. Lots of video on this thing, but I'm worried about beach balling, though I don't think -200rpm would make much a difference.
3. Western Digital Scorpio Blue 750GB 5400rpm - $110
Same speed as my current drive, still really huge, and I can put the money saved toward a firewire drive in the future. Wondering if this would be okay versus a 7200rpm drive.
Keep in mind, I'm looking for a solution that has decent internal space, while still allowing me to edit without the computer beach balling all the time. Something that won't make editing a chore and will keep me happy until I can afford to get a firewire external. I know it's not the greatest thing to edit on the boot drive, and I've thought about just keeping my current drive and going for the 1tb 7200rpm OWC external, but I really need an upgraded internal. I'd hate to have to be tethered to a usb drive constantly due to lack of media space. My main desktop will be left at home since I have no room for it, which is why I really need a good sized laptop drive for my media.
Thanks so much for the help! I'm planing on purchasing on the 15th.
I'm really stuck on this decision. I can't decide what the best route to go is.
I'd ideally prefer the larger drives, but I'm worried my editing performance will be hindered, and the prices will put me that much further from a dedicated external scratch/project drive.
After a lot of thought, I'm leaning towards the 7200rpm drive and then just putting the extra money towards an external.
