I'd imagine different shades would give you different results.

Somewhere...I have no idea where...I read of someone white balancing to the palm of their hand to change the look of the shot. :) I guess you could use just about anything, depending on the effect you wanted.

GenJerDan - Exactly. Spend the evening balancing off of different objects you have lying around your house and see if you get any cool looks from it. What could it hurt?

Re: Not-So-White Balance

Go into PHOTOSHOP and FILL 8 1/2 X 11 templates with different colors and PRINT them.

Re: Not-So-White Balance

I figured you could actually paint some thin plywood boards with variations on sky blue and robin's egg blue...maybe each would provide the proper degree of warming in different lighting situations.

Also, there are a couple of DP's who use painted plywood and card as colored bounce material...

very subtle, very nice effect.

Re: Not-So-White Balance

Is there anyone here who's familiar with both white balance cards and Pantone numbers, and could recommend a few blue numbers to get started with?

Re: Not-So-White Balance

How exact I do not know. Copy image into PHOTOSHOP and use EYEDROPPER and then FILL or you can just buy these (Very inexpensive)

Re: Not-So-White Balance

Wouldn't it be easier to balance everything to a white card and then adjust it in post? Locking yourself into these colours early on would make it harder to match scenes wouldn't it?
