Not another NLE vs NLE thread

Okay, I've been a Vegas user since version 6... Before that I used to Premier back in the days when it used to be sluggish and buggy.

I'm at at crossroad right now with deciding which NLE system to go with. My old P4 is up for retirement. I currently run Vegas 7 on it but has been tempted to go with FCP after having edited a music video on it last summer.

I hear the current version of Premier is alot like FCP... it'd be going back to the 3-point editing style for sure and I'm okay with that.

What I LOVE about Vegas is how responsive it is, even on my old P4 system. Scrubbing and playback and dragging on the timeline all responds instantaneously to my keystrokes. FCP actually felt a bit sluggish by comparison, despite it running on a modern C2D system.

How is Premier in this regard? For those of you who is experienced with both current versions of Vegas and Premier, would you say Premier is comparable to Vegas in response speed?

hey,

I have limited experience with Vegas. I used Vegas 8, around four times, I am a PPro user, but I will have to admit that Vegas was more responive. You can use Vegas on a P3 and it will be more responsive then PPro. With that being said, if you have a Core 2 Duo sytem, then PPro is pretty quick on its feet. But again, you have to have a solid system. The only reason I am staying with PPro, is because it easily integrates with After Effects, Encore, Soundbooth and Audition. Other wise I would have gone with either Vegas or Avid.

Hope that helps,

Premiere is not anything like FCP (I have both).

Why change from something you are comfortable/famliar with?

I have never had "responsiveness" problems with Premiere although I would say my Mac version is slightly less responsive than my Windows version ( I have both of these as well).

Tried Vegas once and could not fathom the interface. Thats not to say it aint good but it wasnt for me and my workflow. (P2 mxf)

I downloaded the demo version of Premiere CS3 and I've noticed a delay when pressing "L" to play. I was working with SD footage with no effects applied, just a simply drag n' drop of clip onto the timeline. Pressing "L" there would be a 1sec delay before the play starts.. On Vegas 7, the play starts without any delay. In fact, I can quickly tap on the L key and the play/stop would respond in-sync.

Is this delay typical of Premiere? Or maybe it has to do with my old system?

Using pp2 on core 2quad 6600 4g ram. running AE&PP no lag - fast response time. Can render out on after effects and keep editing on PP and only then will PP slightly lag.

I think prem is far more responisive than FCP, but the load times for CS3 Project suck anywhere from 3 to 5 mins for a big MXF project :(
