Normal Speed and SPed up video in same shot

I am planning a shoot on location where I want the talent to be sitting in the median of a busy downtown strip. I want them to be shot with the intention of normal playback. I want the north and southbound traffic sped up and all this to happen in the same shot! I was thinking about possibly using the greenscreen to capture this effect but now that I think about it I would have to replace the green with something! That might not work.

Could I shoot like 10 minutes of downtown traffic b-roll with the camera locked down then without moving the camera position the talent in front of the camera and shoot them doing whatever it is they are doing and then in post somehow mend the 2 shots together to make one shot where the traffic is sped up and the talent isnt? Would a Garbage Matte work for this?

You should have watched Scharky's movie. He has used something like this. But he did Blue Screen (or Green Screen) and time-lapse for the speed up traffic.

Try contacting him.

All the best

that would be the easier way to do it. Use a vertical element like a street pole to give you a clean line to work with when merging the 2. Im guessing that the shot will be from the side walk hes on and the traffic will be on one side of the frame and he on the other. The pole can be a natural separation point that can be blurred if its close enough in the forground for a Faux DOF effect. The only things you have to watch for is cloud cover and dont use auto iris or balance so the exposure is consistant. Not saying that you use them but Im am mentioning them anyway.
